Re: Vaccination opinion...

  • It is because of people like me who choose to vaccinate that there is even a choice.  Which is to say that people who do not vaccinate are relying on 'herd immunity.'  This 'herd immunity' is meant to protect people who can not be vaccinated for a variety of reasons which is why I think vaccinations go beyond a single child and become a social responsibility.

Preservatives: Have been taking out of MMR, flu vaccines for children and probably others as well, so that seems like a moot point.

Autism: It is my belief that this has totally been debunked.

Breastfeeding: You can't BF forever, then what?

  • She might be a nurse, but I am an infectious disease epidemiologist, and having been involved in outbreak investigations of infants and toddlers who became hospitalized with very severe illnesses because their parents refused to vaccinate, to ME the choice is very clear. Unless you have a known reaction or risk of bad reactions in your family, then the benefits far outweigh the risks. I worked at CDC and they take this very seriously. There are very good people there--moms and dads--whose jobs it is to evaluate the safety of vaccines at the population level. Vaccines not only protect us, but through herd immunity help us to eradicate terrible diseases. I doubt anyone is sad smallpox is gone, and polio has been eradicated from many nations because of vaccines. And the fact that she goes on to again bring up an association with autism? Ugh... so many studies have looked at this and found zero associations. This message is simply irresponsible. People have the right to make their own choices, but her "logic" is all based on false assertions. Yes, breastmilk is wonderful and I still pump for the immune system benefits, but it will not prevent pertussis which can cause death (and has been increasing in incidence in proportion to the increasing movements of anti-vaccination campaigns, along with measles). Anyhow, as a "geek with a beaker" and also a mom to an amazing little boy, I wholeheartedly disagree with this nurse. The science is not on her side.
