Re: Can you use these items while prego?

  • I wouldn't.  Anything that you put on your skin goes straight to your baby.  So I would put those self tanning chemicals on my skin. Not sure about the teeth whitener, but I'd probably just skip that too to be safe.

  • That's not true.

I was told not to whiten my teeth while pregnant because that's in your mouth so if you swallow it's going to get digested and broken down.

Topical stuff, like sunless tanner, is totally safe! Mystic Tan's aka spray tans are totally safe while pregnant! You can even go tanning if you're pregnant. I have to once a month due to my psoriasis, as long as the fan is on and you're not getting overheated you're fine, but it also varies from doctor to doctor as if it's kosher with them.

  • I wouldn't use self tanner or white strips, but I do use whitening toothpaste and lay out in the sun (with sunscreen). Although, you probably can't do that if you don't live in southern California.

  • I have no idea about the white strips since I've never used them, pregnant or not. I see no reason, though, why you couldn't use a product like Jergens or Aveeno. Again, I don't know from experience but two friends of mine, who've recently given birth, were given the go ahead by their OBs after asking if they could continue to use the products during their pregnancies.

  • From what I read a long time ago is that there is a chance that the sunless tanner may not blend well or look right because of your body's hormones. I had a similar experience with an at-home hair color I did in December.
  • From what I've read, Crest whitestrips no, self-tanner yes. But I've also heard that the pigment of the self-tanner can go weird during pregnancy so you may want to skip that too.

Totally safe?! You're delusional. Find the supporting research for that. Everything I have read says it has not been researched enough and inconclusive. My doc says the same thing.

  • I dont know about the white strips, just call your dr real quick, but I do know that I got a spray tan while prego. I asked the salon and they said it was perfectly safe, that they use a vegatable oil based spray (never heard of that but eh...ok). It didn't have any strong odor or fumes or anything... I also tanned in a tanning bed while I was prego with my first. My dr said the main thing is just to make sure I dont get too hot. But I know alot of different drs have different takes on this issue so you will just have to see what your dr thinks is best for you.

  • Pregnancy does awful things to your teeth, and can make them much weaker. I wouldn't do anything to them if I were you.

  • I use Jergen's natural glow (lotion with just a touch of self tanner) & I love it-my dr said its perfectly safe :) but no I'd just use a whitening toothpaste & skip the strips til after baby's born. HTH

I think you're totally delusional. I'm a nursing student and from my knowledge of medications and such, not much gets absorbed into the body. Maybe the area, but that's it. Topical things are considered to have a local effect, not an all over effect. It's one thing for a doctor to say that their preference is that their patients not sure it, but I'd like to see the "research" you have on it. It's just the same as taking a category C drug or dying your hair. There's not enough info either way, but a lot of sunless tanners use a bronzer. The same stuff women slather on their faces day after day.

As usual you prove you have minimal understanding of anything medical in addition to giving terrible advice.

There is no clear evidence either way.  This means just that, you are taking a risk if you use them period since there is no good studies so it's not "definitely safe".  Tanning booths also are not typically recommended due to hyperthermia risk.  Your doctor is also an idiot to had you use a tanning bed to treat psoriasis.  This has fallen out of favor because of massive evidence of the increase in skin cancer (melanoma) in particular with the beds.  It also is not recommended by the national psoriasis organization fyi.  There are safer way of UV exposure then a tanning bed for various skin conditions.  Please stop giving medical advice, you have a poor quality education and you can potentially hurt someone.
