Parenting after 35

Allergies (Follow Up)

First of all, Ilumine, you're a complete hag. I had my child after I already had two dogs. I am desperately trying to find solutions to help my sweet child with his allergies. I don't need your self-righteous ass telling me I am "choosing to do it to him." You need to absolutely step off. Now.

For all the rest of you, thanks so much for your help. We have decided to go with either a wood or a laminate floor (Shaw makes some really good eco-friendly laminate floors that look pretty good so I am considering that but the higher you go up in quality, the more the price starts to look like wood so we might just go that way).

Another thing some of you mentioned that I am going to look into asap is an air purification system. I already have a Dyson and vacuum daily. We also keep the dogs outside most of the time during the day. Finding a new home for the dogs will be my last option but will be a necessary consideration if the other things don't help.

Newbee, as far as the food stuff goes...sorry, I was kind of short on that. We definitely avoid the foods he's allergic to most of the time. I didn't mean to gloss over that. :) Peanuts are just the only one that seem to be life threatening.

Thanks girls!

Say whaaa?? WhoTF is that? Off to check now.

And glad you guys are moving forward with the HW floors and stuff.

And something I forgot earlier, I think a big, big problem with wee'uns having environmental allergies is that they don't know to not touch their eyes. So maybe be a bit more diligent about making J wash his hands lots.

    Good luck, girl!

  • Good luck with the investments! I hope you already scared out the allergies with this decision. One day when I have my own house it will definitely be carpetles.

    P.S. Nice siggy pic.

  • Haven't looked at the prior post but probably a troll.  Ignore it, it goes away.

Hope your steps solve the problem.  I think you are doing all you can in this situation for now.  GL!

  • BB, what the heck is a furnace duct? Is that CO talk? :)

I am assuming you mean heat and air conditioning filters and ducts? We change the filters out more often that instructed but...I might need to check into duct cleaning. I just returned from Fry's. I bought 3 air purification systems. Tomorrow, I tackle hardwood floors. I have a few friends who might be able to help me score a deal. I sure hope so as now I am determined to get hardwood (vs laminate). We already overbought on our house...I just don't want to do anything to it that could cause it to decrease in value.

  • Who the F is bothering our sweet bumpie buddy? **off to check on that too**

I assume you already got rid of down comforters and pillows. DH is allergic to them so my beloved down comforter had to go.

I hope your sweet little boy feels better soon. Don't move to San Antonio, it's the worst place to live with allergies. Even people that never had allergies get them here! Lots of cedar pollen and such.

    Good luck Smile

Me: 44 DH: 42. DS born healthy at 40 weeks 8/24/09. TTC since then with no luck or ART. Surprise BFP 8/6/14... MMC @ 8 weeks 4 days... Miss you everyday sweet baby angel.
  • I had a lot of allergies as a child (environmental, not food) but it wasn't until our dog died and we got cats that they really became a huge problem.  I remember when my mom took me to the allergist, she joked that she hoped she and my dad wouldn't have to get rid of me (instead of the cats).  I began a years-long regimen of allergy shots (turns out I was also allergic to dogs, hence my red, itchy eyes and runny nose from age 2-13). I have to say, I became a new person and no longer suffer.

Anyway, I agree with the non-carpeted floors, home filters, etc.   I think there are also pet shampoos that are supposed to help allergy sufferers...you might look into that too.

  • Jen, call me.  I went through asthma/allergy issues with Pumpkin.  I didn't get rid of my inside dog, a golden retriever.  P outgrew her allergies and only occasionally now has asthma attacks.  The dr prescribed inhaled steriods and albuterol, along with daily singulair.  A study came out later that said kids who grow up with animals have a better chance of outgrowing or becoming immune to the dander allergies. It can be done. I wish I could remember the source of the study, but it was about 8 years ago. Don't get discouraged!  ((HUGS))

  • I remember sitting in the dr's office with Pumpkin and my (then) husband as the dr was saying I need to get rid of my dog.  I flat out refused.  My husband could not understand it, but I told him that I had the dog long before I had a husband and child.  Basically, the dog had seniority and wasn't going anywhere.  She was an inside dog, and I refused to make her an outside dog.  The Georgia summers would have killed her.  I did what I could.  I separated the baby from the dog with gates, bought a ridiculously expensive vaccum, got rid of all her stuffed animals, cleaned, bought air purifiers, humidifiers, had the dog shaved and groomed regularly, and put the baby on meds.  She was fine.  They both were.  Sandy lived to the ripe old age of 15, was an inside dog her entire life, and they were the best of friends.

  • Ducts are all the silver pipeworks that connects your heating and cooling systems to the vents, etc.  HUGE amounts of crap/dust/allergens get in there and never come out unless you get in there and clean 'em out.  So every time your AC or furnace kicks in, that crap sprays all over and you don't even know it.

Changing the filters is a good start, but that's sorta like putting a band-aid on over a gusher of a cut.. stuff still gets out.   Regular duct cleaning is a must-do if you have allergies.

You'll find coupons and special deals all the time for duct cleaning.  Usually a couple of hundred bucks.. but so worth it.

  • Totally second getting the ducts cleaned - made a huge difference in my ability to breath in our condo and now we have it done every year or so.  Also, don't want to knock your dyson, but we had a dyson and it died and got a riccar and it is amazing and kicks the dyson's butt and we had three cats.  It's not cheap but so worth it and so much better than the dyson.

Jennifer, i agree with you that you should do  everything you can to make cosmetic changes to your home to make your little guy more comfortable. We had the hardwood floors refinished, and it made a difference with my allergies.  if you have area rugs, super easy to have them cleaned.

As for keeping your dogs,I agree that should be a last option, as they are a part of your family. For those of you who think that it would be the first thing that people would think of changing, that may be your choice, and it is jennifer's choice to do what is right for her family.

environmental allergies are likely to be the source of your problem BUT do you know you LO is highly allergic to your dogs? if he or she is Id stop all the $$ changes and remove the dog, period. an animal does not have senority over a child. ever.

Nobody's talking about putting a pet's well being over a child's.  That hasn't been said AT ALL.  She's trying to be a great mom and responsible pet owner.  Giving your animal away when there are other possible solutions is HIGHLY IRRESPONSIBLE.  There are thousands (millions?) of unwanted pets out there already.  Adding to that is just tragic.  She can - and is - making changes that allow her child to live happily with a pet in the house.  She's been very clear that *IF* it comes down to it, she will re-home the pet over the health of her child.

For Christ's Sake people - she was very clear about all of it.

Thank you. I don't know who these morons are but I wish they'd quietly go back to the rock they crawled out from under. I thought I had been clear, too.
