BFing after minor surgery

Yesterday I had my appendix taken out. I last nursed my LO at 5 a.m. Friday. I pumped at the hospital at 8:30, 11:30, 1:30 (dumped it after contrast dye was given) and then had surgery so I didn't pump until 9 p.m. (also dumped). I woke up at 6 a.m. and pumped a decent but not great amount ~9 ounces (I would have expected 12 or so) and then got the go ahead to nurse him outright.

I got IV fluids and was doing my best to drink (I didn't eat for 36 hours or so). My question is, has anyone been through a similar situation and come out the other end OK with breastfeeding? It would break my heart if this affected my supply long term.

Re: BFing after minor surgery

  • I had surgery to get my gall bladder out at about 6 months postpartum. I had to report for surgery at 6 am and pumped right before. I then pumped right when I got home (maybe 3 pm...) and every few hours for the next 24 (although I did let myself sleep through the night).  My supply and my son did just fine and he's still nursing 1.5 years later.
