So Many Choices...

Hey girls,

I usually am on the 3rd Tri board, but I figured you ladies could maybe answer this one for me. I'm preparing everything I need for when DS is born (march 11). I want to BF but also pump. Since I'm planning on primarily BFing and only pumping like before I go somewhere without baby, I was just going to buy a cheap manual pump. I was looking at the options in the store and DH thinks I need a double electric. He doubts a single manual will work well and thinks I will get sick of pumping it myself. We think this will be our last child, so I didn't want to go out and spend a bunch on a pump that wont get used very much.

Anyone have any suggestions as to which is a good pump, reasonably priced?

Oh, and I've also been looking a little on Ebay, but I'm not sure a pump is something to buy used...

Re: So Many Choices...

  • If you are going to be a SAH mom and EBF, I think a single pump is a reasonable choice. A manual would be a lot of work, and you can't do anything else while you use a manual pump. If you have a hands free bra, you can set up an electric pump and play with baby or surf the internet while you're pumping. Check to see if your hospital gives out manual pumps as well. I got one for free, and keep it as a backup to my electric.

If you do buy a used pump, make sure it is a closed system. I believe the Ameda Purely Yours is a closed system. The popular Medela Pump in Style Advanced is NOT a closed system, and should only be used by one person.

No specific recommendations, as I have a double electric (medela PISA). I love it, but I also work full time and use it at least 3 times per day.

    Congrats on your little one!

  • I've been recommended by all my friends medala pump in style.  All of my coworkers all have this as well and loved it.  That being said it is expensvie but check on Babydepot. I had a 15% off coupon and I got a freestyle medela pump for $250 and it came with a free harmony hand pump which might be helpful in the beginning with engorgement.  Electric pumps are faster and you get more out usually.  You can also just rent one from the hospital until you decide what works best for you.  But I would check out babydepot, I couldn't believe the deal I got considering most places were selling the pumps at cost.
  • You can get a single electric at Walmart for about $30. It probably works fine for what you need. Another option (if you have a good supply) would be to rent one for a while, build up a stash and then give it back, then later if you use up your stash (say 6 months or so down the road) rent it for another month to build up a new stash.
