High-Risk Pregnancy

How early did you show signs of pre-e?

HI everyone! I have never posted here before but thought maybe someone here could help me understand. I know once the protein in your urine hits 300 with high bp its pre-e. However, after my first ob appt I got a call saying it was 180 which they said anything over 150 is elevated and they would be watching it but wanted me to know it was a sign of the beginning. So everything I have researched said it starts after twenty weeks which left me super confused. Any insight into this would be very much appreciated!

TIA!!

Re: How early did you show signs of pre-e?

  • Hi,

I started showing signs at 28 weeks and my protein was 180. He took me out of work and put me on weekly 24 hour urine collections. By the time I delivered, less than 5 weeks later, it was just under 6,000. There is more to pre-e than just the protein so be on the look out for swelling, bp, and visual changes. Good luck with everything and if it does progress seriosly do everything your doctor and or perinatologist says.

  • Wow! That has me worried. I just wonder why so early? And if it will progress like that since it is SO early in my pregnancy!
  • I'm sorry you are going through this :( pre-e is awful!  I would watch out for shortness of breath (out of the norm), vision changes, swelling, and headaches that won't go away.  I don't remember my numbers but when I went to my regular appt. they saw that my blood pressure was high and they immediately transferred me to the hospital where they did a 24 hour urine test.  They then realized that yes I indeed had pre-e.  I had to go the specialist once a week, to the hospital to be monitored once week, and to my regular OB once week...needless to say it was exhausting and stressful!  Mine started 3 and a half months before I was due, I ended up delivering my baby at 38 weeks. I hope everything goes smoothly for you and it was a one time thing.  Good luck!!!

  • I'm definitely not a doctor, but the way things were explained to me, pre-e is really only diagnosed after 20 weeks.  My doctor said that the first trimester generally artificially lowers high blood pressure, and then as the placenta takes over more, you'll start to see the blood pressure rising and kidney function being affected.  Since you don't even have a fully-functioning placenta at this point, I would think my doctor would look more at your situation as wondering if there was pre-existing high bp (maybe you weren't regularly monitoring it before you were pg?) and some kidney issues resulting from the high bp that would lead to the protein in your urine.  I'm sure it will definitely be something to keep a close eye on, but I wouldn't think an actual pre-e diagnosis would happen for you until much later.  Hang in there!

  • I started showing signs of pre-e at 32 weeks (high BP, protein in urine and large amounts in weight gain in short amounts of time). My doctor told me that was early to be showing signs but I'm not sure why because you can be diagnosed anytime after 20 weeks. I wasn't officially diagnosed until a little after 33 weeks. I did a 24 hour urine catch and it came back around 250 and the doctor who diagnosed me said they don't like anything over 150. After that I got put on bed rest and was set for induction.

These things can be different for everybody. I would say do your research but ultimately your doctor knows what is best. I hope you can avoid the pre-e diagnosis! Good luck!

  • With my son I started swelling around 26-27 weeks. It didn't get bad until I hit 29 weeks. I went in for my dr apt and left going to L&D. I delievered my son at 30 weeks.

With this pregnancy my BP have been great. Sometimes they are a little higher (130/80 ish) but come back down. We havn't broken the 140/90 threshhold yet, thankfully. I did have a +1 protein in my urine at my 8 week apt. I was told with my history and the BP and Urine I had that day I would be put on hospital bedrest at 24 weeks.

  • Just lurking here...

I was diagnosed with Pre-E at 25 weeks but started showing sigsn of it at 18 weeks (insane swelling, headaches that won't go away, felt drunk, gaining 8lbs in 3 days). I was in the process of switching to a doctor that wasn't an asshat and am pretty sure if I had made the switch a month earlier, it would have been caught much sooner and would have been able to get closer to my due date before delivering. Do everything your doctors advise you to do and keep positive vibes!

  • With my first pregnancy I started to show signs of pre-e at 28 weeks. I had lots of swelling, visual changes, and minor headaches (the pain would go away) and high blood pressure. This pregnancy knock on wood, nothing yet.

  • I'd be hesitant to accept any sort of pre-E diagnosis this early. Lots of things can cause protein... anything from an infection to renal disease. I'll put it this way. If I'd gotten pregnant a few years ago, my first 24 hour urine would have been 6000mg because I had kidney disease and didn't know it. I'm definitely not saying to worry about that with numbers like yours though. It just seems more likely you might have a bladder infection than Pre-E this early.
