Pull Ups at school?

DS teacher at school suggested we get him started on Pull Ups to get him used to pulling his pants down and up which is fine but how would you go about introducing these? Are they as absorbent as diapers? Could we just use Pull ups and ditch the diapers altogether? Or would you just send Pull Ups to school and use diapers at home?

Re: Pull Ups at school?

  • I would try pull-ups at school and ditch diapers at home. When he becomes successful using the pull-ups, I would do underwear.

  • So what would I put on him at home if I am ditchng diapers? Just have him in Pull Ups all the time?

  • 1. Use pull-ups at school and diapers at home (if you have diapers left). Once the diapers are completely gone, I would see how he's doing with the pull-ups and use them all the time.

    2. I would then try doing underwear at home (over a weekend) to see how he does. It took DS 2.5 days to potty train. He does wear pull-ups at night still since it's easier for us not to have to worry about accidents. The pull-ups are not as absorbent as the diapers.

  • I'm guessing they're trying to encourage PTing, but I'm not sure why they'd encourage pull-ups, as pull-ups are just glorified diapers. When DS started school this fall he needed to be PT'd but he wasnt 100% there when he started school. Even so, his school so 'no pull-ups, just underwear'. In your case I would say undies at home, to encourage PTing, and pull-ups at school as per their suggestion. Ultimately not using Pull-ups at all is usually best for PTing...

They are. He's not quite ready for PT yet they say but they want to get him practicing the pulling up and down of pants.

  • Pull Ups are expensive. And my daughter just sees them as "big girl diapers." She never associated them with potty training, so we don't even bother. At school, she's in diapers, and the teachers there say it's totally fine and they just take it off. And she's had three potty successes so far. When we're at home, we rotate between diapers and underwear for her. It just depends on the situation and what my daughter is feeling like. At first I was all militant about the potty training thing, but it was stressing everyone out. So we just go with our daughter's cues. But yeah, pull ups are crazy expensive...even the Target brand. We just do without them.

  • I'd try pt'ing him at home over a weekend and see how it goes.  One day we put undies on ds and that was it.  He's had  few accidents, but was basically ready to pt (this was like a month ago-so 2 months before age 3).  We just put him in undies for school.  He wears pull ups at night, because we wanted to ditch the diaper all together, so he wouldn't ask for them back (he did once or twice). He had no issues pulling his underwear and pants down at school (and he'd never done it before, so it wasn't something he needed to practice).  We call pull ups sleeping undies, and he doesn't think they're like a diaper-in our house, diapers are for babies.  If your son isn't ready to pt, I don't know if I'd do pull ups because they're expensive and just glorified diapers.

  • I teach a 2 year old class, so I get the teacher's perspective. It is kind of a pain to put a diaper on a standing child, especially if the child is wanting to sit on the potty a lot. It is much easier if they have a Pull up on & you can just pull it up :)

I don't think that pull ups cost much more than diapers if your child is in a larger size. My DD2 wears a sz 6 diaper or a 3t-4t pull up & there is only a few less in the pull up package for the same price.

  • Thanks for all the replies. DS isnt quite ready to go completely diaperless but I think getting him one step closer with practicing pulling up and down of pants and if we just switch gradually from diapers to Pull Ups it wont be too much of a change $$ wise. Plus hopefully this is a transition away from paying for diapers, etc altogether
