Breastfeeding

Pumping question

I was given a Medela Pump In Style Advanced from a friend of mine who is done BFing and having kids. It is just the bag and the machine in the bag, as all the other parts need to be replaced. Sooo, I bought the tubing, size large breast shields, lansinoh cream, breast pads and a ton of little medela bottles/storage bags.

I am noticing that the websites also sell valves and membranes. Do I need those as well? The sheilds do not seem to have valves and membranes. Where do they go??

Also, anything else I need to get started? TIA!

ETA: I also have nursing bras, some tanks, and a Boppy as well as a ton of Tommy Tippy bottles for the stored BM =)

Re: Pumping question

  • You need the connectors - you may only find these on the medela website at https://www.medelabreastfeedingus.com/store/551/pump-in-style-advanced-on-the-go-tote

The connectors connect the breastshields, tubing and bottles all together.  You do require the valves and membranes as that is what helps with the suction.  They go onto the connectors.

  • I like the lansinoh storage bags because they freeze flat. You need valves and membranes. With them, it wont do anything. They attach to the shields at the bottom where the bottle is. I like having an extra set of shields. For storage, I heard there are cheap bottles like Gerber which also fit on to the pump.
I never used the cream, but my bf class made it sound like it was needed.

  • Ditto the other ladies.  It's also helpful to have multiple sets of flanges.  That way, if one fails (and they do - I've had it happen at 3am), you have a backup.  Extra membranes are key as they are tiny and get lost.  The pump does not work without them.  If you're going to freeze in bottles, I hope you have a lot of open freezer space.  Lasinoh bags are much better for freezing large amounts of milk.  I usually freeze 3-4 ounces in each bag so I can easily pull one out for a feeding if I need it.  The bags also defrost and freeze a lot faster as they're flatter.

If you're still having a lot of nipple pain using the lanolin cream, try using plain, unflavored chapstick.  It'll keep enough moisture there to soothe, but still allow you to callous enough to make it less painful.  Lanolin typically keeps you too soft to callous.
