We have a guest coming into town this weekend... I'm headed to the grocery store and wondering what I should have on hand. When you guys have guests, do you plan out all the meals or just buy stuff? What kind of stuff? Also, how about drinks? We are pretty basic water, tea, coffee around here most times.

Re: What Food/Drinks to Have in the House for Company?
April '14 Siggy Challenge:
I always make sure to have good breakfast stuff - OJ, creamer for coffee, maybe bagels or something like that.
I also make sure to have lunch meat and cheese for lunches.
We don't drink a lot of soda but I will buy some soda for something different to offer to drink.
And yes, I would plan out dinners too. Not sure how many nights you will have them but I might plan a nice dinner at home and then plan to go out one night. A good and easy dinner at home would be spaghetti, salad, bread and a dessert. (I'd do chocolate cake, brownies or chocolate chip cookies.)
Well, I always plan out meals, so if we have a guest and I know them well enough to know, I make sure to plan meals that they really enjoy. Like my mom loves butternut squash, so I plan for that.
Really, my family are the only ones who come stay with us... so I just email them ahead of time and ask them what kind of breakfast foods and drinks they'd like. I always make sure to stock the fridge with Activia yogurt for my mom because she eats one every morning...
Drinks, we're basic like you and unless someone requests something, I don't buy anything. I don't want it around the house 1/2 full

I ask people before they come if they need anything special from the store. I meal plan every week anyways because we don't have a lot of storage to stock up. I do buy a few extra snack items (chips, crackers, nuts etc) to have on hand. I will also make cookies for something sweet. As far as drinks go, I don't think you need to provide anything else than water, tea, coffee. Maybe some milk. I always have coke zero in the house for me, but I don't buy non-diet drinks unless they ask before they come. If someone needs something while they are here, the grocery store is only 5 minutes away. I will be more than happy to run go get it.
The only drinks we ever have in the house are water (the free from the tap kind, LOL), coffee, tea and milk. So if we're having guests I usually brew some iced tea, make lemonade and grab a bottle of whatever soda I happen to know they like.
We also never have munchy/snack food in the house so I usually get some trail mix, chips & salsa, hummus & pita and things like that to have on hand.
