How do I know when my thrush is gone?

It's been maybe 2.5 weeks now. My son's is almost completely gone THANK G-D but my nipples are soooo pink and sensitive still.

For anyone who's had it and it left your system, how did you know it was gone?

This blows.

Re: How do I know when my thrush is gone?

  • Ugh- I HATE thrush. What meds are you on? There is a lot of resistance, so it may be that it is not responding well to the meds you're using. I was better after about 7-10 days of diflucan for us both. I used it for 8 days past symptom resolution. I THINK it's gone, we've been off meds for 4-5 weeks, but sometimes I still feel like my nipples are burning/sensitive so I still use the topical stuff a few times per day. I wish I had a good answer for you!

Are you using the nystatin cream? Is the burning in your breast at all or just on your nipples? I think they will prescribe diflucan if it's in your milk ducts.  If it's not getting better and if you think it's starting to get into your milk ducts, I would definitely get diflucan along with triple nipple cream. I took 2 pills 400mg the first day and then 1 pill 200mg for 2 weeks but I had to get another 2 week refill because I was still feeling shooting pains. hth!

yea i'm using the cream and my son is using the drops (and now the cream because it spread to his diaper uggggh). the burning is in my boobs and nipples but my nipples are crazy pink/red and sensitive. sometimes it feels like they're being ripped apart by glass or nails or something. i might have to go to the clinic nearby since i don't have insurance. bummer.

  • it sounds like it's definitely in your milk ducts. =( i know how painful it is! i would dread feedings and cry through them. you will definitely need diflucan. i hope you are able to get it soon! i felt better after 24 hours. in the meantime i would do vinegar rinses and maybe get some monistat or lotrimin cream and apply in between feeds.

actually nm on the monistat or lotrimin since you have the nystatin ointment.

thank you for your help. it's a nightmare! i use the nystatin cream twice a day like it says but i swear it just isn't helping. i mean, from 1-10 it was a 15 and now it's an 8, but 8 still sucks!

  • I agree with PP, you probably should ask for diflucan since it isn't getting any better. I had LO put on diflucan too, which some pedi's are nervous about, but it's worth asking about. A lot of people just don't get better on the nystatin. Make sure you're doing all the other cleaning/washing things. I also took probiotics and grapefruit seed extract orally which I think helped.

Just wanted to add to make sure that you let them air out as often as you can.  Mine kept coming back because I was leaking a lot and my breast pads were constantly soaked, plus the weather got really humid.  I changed to Lansinoh and made sure my nipples got some drying time.

    Good luck, thrush sucks.

i was letting them air out over night and then i'd wake up to milk leaking all over me! ugh.
