Blue room for a girl?

We're team green so I was thinking I would paint the nursery sky blue and add some wall decals once s/he is here. If it's a girl it would be something like this.

For a boy we'd do either city decals or a tree with monkeys in it. Either way it would be the sky.

My sister is acting like I'm a horrible mom if I put a girl in a blue room but with feminine touches, I do not see the problem. WDYT?

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

Re: Blue room for a girl?

  • Do blue! Do what YOU want. The room we have our nursery in was already painted blue and if our first had been a girl we had NO plans of painting. I was going to do what you want to do and add girlie accessories.

  • I think it's a great idea. The room that will be baby girls nursery is already a great robins egg blue and I am leaving it. The crib is white, the dresser/changing table is milk black and I am decorating with random things....no theme.

  • I think you should do what you like. The sky IS blue, whether or not you have a boy or girl! Unless you start getting into sunrises and sunsets.

I love the decals that you linked. They're very cute and they add a feminine touch without being too girly. If I were having a girl I would probably do something similar -- use a gender neutral color as a background and accentuate it with feminine touches.

Tell your sister that she can do what she wants for her own children, when/if she has any.

  • I love blue things for girls! I don't think it's a problem at all to do blue.

  • That is too cute! Blue can be very girly, your sister is nuts. It makes me batty when other people try and decorate for me, it's my house, I have to live with it, so I better like it.
  • I love the idea. For our next baby were being half team green. My FI is going to find out the sex so we can pick stuff for both boy or girl so I decided I want to paint it light grey cause then I can add pops of color. And I'm looking for black and white bedding for boys and girls. Already found my girl not for boy bedding.

  • I'm almost positive we're going to paint the nursery light blue regardless of gender. I LOVE deep pink with pale blue and think it's super girly and a little less cliche.

Not sure if this pic will show but I love this blue girl nursery:image

  • We're doing a medium blue for our team green nursery. I like blue for girls, go for it!

  • my daughter's room is not only blue, it's a bold royal blue, so not even a pretty sky blue. It's still plenty girly :)

  • Love it....our nursery is a pretty bluish/greenish color and we painted it before we knew that this was a boy.... I think that you should paint the nursery whatever color you like, and tell your sister to stuff it!
  • imagemj.reilly:

It is blue. A color. It is not like you are skipping the girl's section and getting everything labeled for "boys."

I hate gender stereotypes / gender-specific toys/colors/etc. Girls can have a blue room. Girls can wear blue. Girls can even play with boy toys (DD loves Ninja Turtles and collecting bugs).

Blue walls is 1000% fine for a girl. Plus, Tiffany Blue / Robin Eggs Blue has been kind of in for girl rooms for a long time.

Exactly! I get so annoyed when people ask if their crib is girly enough to be in a girl's room...uhhhhh. It's a crib. It has no gender, I think you'll live.

I just made an inspiration board for a client for a nursery that's Navy & Coral. The walls will be Navy, but the room is still plenty feminine. Color doesn't dictate gender.

  • Anyone who is in your home looking at your nursery would already know that your baby is a girl.  Blue is a beautiful color!  I see no reason why she can't have a blue room.  The only reason I'm not getting a blue stroller, on the other hand, is because I don't want people on the street to say, "Oh, what a cute little boy."  That would just irritate me.  This should not be an issue in your home!

  • We're keeping our nursery a neutral tan, but IF we were painting it would be blue no matter the sex! That is perfectly acceptable. Gosh I hate gender stereotypes.

  • I think baby blue walls with girlie colored accents is beautiful for a girls' nursery. I agree with PP, do what YOU want. :)

  • I happen to love the color blue for a nursery.  Do what you want.  Girly accents are fine with blue.  If we didn't already have a plan for when we have kids, I would consider using blue as a wall color.  It is totally fine and will look great I am sure.

  • We knew we were having a girl and painted our DD's room blue.  Technically it's Benjamin Moore's Iced Green, but it's a very pale, soft aqua.  Her bedding is pink and white.

  • why wouldnt you use blue for a girls room? blue is feminine. i don tunderstand why certain colors "belong" to certain sexes. Its colors. COlors belong to everyone.

  • We were Team Green. Our nursery has charcoal gray walls and black furniture. We had a girl. Tell your sister to shove it. Not everything has to be girly/frilly/pink.

  • Our daughter's room is a Tiffany Blue sort of color. Here's one picture - more pictures are on my blog here: https://www.themagicofmama.com/2011/12/coras-nursery.html

  • DD2's nursery is blue and I think I love it more than the pink nursery we did for DD1.  Here is a link to pics:

  • Our LO's nursery is blue. It's a medium blue and looks (in my opinion) really good with the light pink and white touches we have added. Her room is actually quite girly and the wall color ended up balancing the decor.
Both my sister and I had blue nurseries, too Smile

Do what you want to do... it's your baby and you will be spending a good amount of time in your LO's room.

  • I love blue and we've had the nursery room painted Cloudy Day by Behr paints since we built the house. It was a guest room, but when we turned it into a nursery, I never intended to change it for a girl or boy. We're having a girl and almost everything in the room is gender neutral, so it's great. Wouldn't change it for the world.

  • If blue is what you like, do it.  We are having a boy but have joked that if he comes out a she, we would just put up pastel polka dots on the walls to make it more girly.  Although we have a sports theme going right now.

  • We know we're having a girl and we painted the room a grayish-blue.  The other colors are yellow and raspberry pink.  It looks very feminine and I love it!

  •  I think it all depends on how you accessorize it - blue doesn't necessarily mean "boy".  We are team green as well, and we painted our nursery a nice shade of blue (Behr Aqua Spray).  We are really happy with it.

  • Our daughters room is white (with an accent wall of turquoise) and pink and chocolate brown accents throughout the room. (Her furniture is chocolate brown) I love the room and it is a perfect room to grow with.

  • Our friends did blue and they didn't know what they were having. They had a girl and did wall decals to make it more "girly" and if they had a boy they would've done "boy" decals.

My personal opinion is do whatever colors you want. And in all reality, a baby isn't going to care Smile

  • If YOU like blue, go blue!!  We did gender neutral & our room is green on top, blue on the bottom with a white chair rail separating & yellow curtains.  I'm not one of those "girls = pink" people (personally, I hate pink).
