Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When did your toddler learn

how to put the shape blocks into a shape sorter?

Match things (matching socks, matching memory cards-basically finding the other half of something).

Re: When did your toddler learn

  • That's a tough one. DD could do the shape sorter reasonably well around 15 months but she doesn't really enjoy doing it.

I doubt she could match memory cards, but if you ask her to match the right cap to the right marker, she could do that. She knows which 2 shoes go together and if you gave her a bunch of lids and tupperware, she could probably figure that out too.

  • DS figured out the shape sorter thingy about a month ago. I still have to help him a little bit. I don't think he could find matching socks though, my DH can't even do that!! hehe

Shape blocks - He does about half of them right

Memory cards - P didn't learn this until he was 5 (but he really didn't understand the game until them either).

  • I'm going by DS1 because DS2 isn't quite there yet.  Shape sorter- around 12 months.  Matching up socks- around 2 years old.  We don't have anything like a memory game so I don't know about that.

  • I don't mean actually playing memory...

I lay out half the cards in front of DD, then I hand her a card one by one and she finds the match.

Like I give her a card that has the sun on it and I ask her to find the other card that matches.

DD can do the shape sorter and matching, so I'm wondering if she's doing what most other toddlers do, or if she's late in the game.  She didn't take interest in the soter until recently.  Before she wanted to squeeze everything into the circle hole, lol.

  • I think the shape sorter was some where around 12-15 months. She had the idea down around a year but would get way to mad when it didn't fit on the first try, I think her patience started to form a bit more closer to 15 months, or so.

I attemted to have her help me find the "pink" sock out of all the socks yesterday as I was sorting them - that didn't go over at all!  She's pretty good with Tupperware containers and what lids fit on what container.

I think I'll bust out the memory game this week and see if she can find the matches, I hadn't given that a thought yet, to try!

  • Shape sorter, I want to say it was about 18 months. I thought it was sort of strange because he could easily do puzzles months before then, and one of his puzzles was shapes, but for some reason he just didn't want to do the shape sorter. Then he no joke just did them all at once one day out of nowhere.

Matching - we haven't really done cards or anything like that. He can find matching socks now, but I never really tried it any earlier.

  • DS is still working on the triangle and square on the shape sorter, but he doesn't practice with it too much, and he much prefers to cheat by just taking the top off if he doesn't get it in the right hole in the first try.    We haven't tried cards or anything - I'm not sure how I'd keep him from tearing them up!  He's been matching shoes for a couple months now.  I didn't even know he could until I was rambling on to him about finding my other shoe (one was already on my foot) and he brought me the other one.  He always brings me the correct shoe or sock now if I ask him to go get it.

I make them and laminate them.
