Buying a dslr

I'm going to make the move and buy a dslr. What do you have, do you like it, or what do you not like about it? Did you buy your camera new or used? Any info is greatly appreciated! TIA!

Re: Buying a dslr

  • My first dslr was a Canon Rebel. I loved it and shot with it for about 7 years. I recently upgraded to a Nikon D5100. The entry-level version is a D3100. This camera blows my skirt up, but I'm pretty sure any new dslr would after using one that was 7 years old. The advancements in digital technology in that time have been amazing!

Best advice is to go to a camera store and actually hold the cameras in your hands. You'll get to ask lots of questions, but most importantly you'll find the camera that feels the best to you.

    Dear Bump: You suck.

  • I have a Canon 40D.  I bought it used off of craiglist about a year ago.  It is now a discontinued model and if I were to do it again I probably would have saved my money and gone for something with a better high ISO.  But, that opinion is based off the fact that my house is fairly dark and I have to up my ISO pretty often.  I would have liked to do the 60D, but I really wasn't crazy about the moveable screen (screamed breakage to me).  An the 50D wasn't a big enough difference (at the time) to make me wait to save up for it.  I love my BFF's 7D, but it's just a little much for me and a little on the heavy side too.

I agree with Rssn that you should go and try them out.  I tried my BFF's 7D and liked it so I figured I would like the xxD line as well.  I kinda wish I had tried some Nikons because I love the vibrant colors that comes out of them.  I was just "scared" because I've never owned anything but canons (and one sony).  I thought that it might create more of a learning curve, which I was already worried about, just in upgrading to a DSLR.

Check out dpreview.com for great reviews and side by side comparisons.  Once you've narrowed some down go try them out at store (or rent one/them from precision).  Then, if you're willing to wait stalk craigslist/ebay for deals.

  • I started with Nikon d80 (d90 now) and currently rock my d700 (we are thinking of upgrading, but i haven't set up business out here, so i'm stalling).

Before that I have a sweet Cannon Rebel slr and LOVED it, but found I much preferred the feel of the  Nikon in my hand.

I suggest going to a camera shop and handling different models. There are Sony, Cannon, Nikon, and others out there. Precision on Lamar and 45th is a great place to go look at cameras. You can tell them what you are going to do with it/looking to learn and they'll suggest models for you.

Spend time with and don't impulse buy :) It's an investment and you don't want to second guess in a few months. I think we visited the d700 3 times before leaving with one :)

  • I've got a Nikon D90 that I love.  I bought it brand new (I found an online retailer and got a pretty good deal on it) but I made sure to check out a camera shop locally and hold as many cameras as I could.  After playing with the different cameras and checking out what my friends had, I knew I wanted to get a Nikon and just narrowed it down to the specific model.
