1st Trimester

5wks along, Bleeding since 1/17/12...

Hello everyone, I am a new member and a new mom-to-be... At least I hope so..  I am a 27 year old smoker, (well, recently a non-smoker!), and this is my first pregnancy...

The date of my last period was 12/18/11, meaning I was due to start my period again on 1/17/12.  Around 1/3/12, I began spotting which is very unusual for me.  It ended after a day or two, but during that time I did take a pregnancy test because I knew it was a possibility - it was negative.  On 1/17/12, like clockwork, what appeared to be my period started.  For the first 5-6 days it was pretty light, (normally by day 3 I'm at a heavy flow.)  Around the 1 week mark, my "period" started to pick up and has been slowling increasing since.  On 1/27/12, upon speaking to a coworker about my situation, I took another pregnancy test.  It was positive.  So I came home from work and took another one.  Positive.  I woke up this morning, 1/28/12, still bleeding, and took another test -- Positive.  I have called my gyno who had an on-call answering service available on this Saturday morning, and that Doctor instructed me to rest this weekend and get in right away Monday morning.

I'm just so concerned... Could I just be one of those unfortunate women who has her period during pregnancy?  Am I already losing this baby?  Should I go to the hospital or wait until Monday?  I am absolutely lost, scared, and paranoid.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • First off, congrats on your BFP and congrats on quitting smoking! I know how hard quitting can be. I am so sorry that you are going through this right now. No one actually gets their period when the pregnant, it is just bleeding that they think is their period. You need to do what is right for you, but I would suggest waiting until Monday. Relax this weekend and drink plenty of water. How heavy is your bleeding? Are you having to use a pad? (don't use any tampons!) Speaking from previous experience, if you are actually miscarrying, there is nothing that they will be able to do except provide you with a big bill. Bleeding could mean nothing, or bleeding could mean something. I bled for abount the first 5-6 days after my BFP this time. I saw the baby's heartbeat earlier this week. Bleeding is very scary during pregnancy! They don't ever call it normal during pregnancy, but it is very common in healthy pregnancies! If I were you, I would get in to the doctor's office ASAP on Monday morning. Good luck! Fingers crossed for you.

  • Thank you for the congrats.  It was relatively light for the first week, and I did start wearing a tampon, (thinking I was just on my period,) about 4 or 5 days ago.  Currently I'd say it's like a regular flow day... But lighter in color.  There is a family history of tube pregnancies in my family, so I am definitely fearing the worse right now...

My doc said that if there is really bad cramping, you should go to the emergency room. That could be a sign of a tubal pregnancy.

  • I will keep my fingers crossed.  Luckily I have not expirenced any cramping whatsoever.  I have felt what I would call a 'digestion' feeling if you could imagine..  No pain, no cramps, just a little gurgling, if you will.  *SIGH*.  I could rack my brain all night, and probably will, but so long as I don't start bleeding heavier, I will just hold out until Monday.  I will just keep hoping for the best...  Thank you so much for the responses.

  • I am going through the same thing. We found out we were pregnant on monday, and we're so excited! Now all of a sudden yesterday, I started bleeding pretty heavily and have slight cramping. I called the dr, and he said there's really nothing they can do at the emergency room to help. He said it is most likely a early miscarriage. He said to rest, and drink lots of water. I should go to his office monday for blood work. I keep searching the web hoping to find good news, something to keep my hopes up. My heart is with you, I hope the best for both of us!
  • I will definitely keep you in my prayers.  I personally have not expirenced any type of cramping of pain, just still bleeding light to regular, so I am going on that for my ray of hope.  I, too, will be seeing my gyno tomorrow (Monday) and I am extremely nervous.  Hoping all goes well for you and I both.
