Placenta Question

Hi July Mommy's & Daddy's!!

I have a weird question. I am 14 weeks and went in for my route check up and the doctor couldn't hear the baby's heartbeat. So I went to have an ultra sound and everything is normal baby's heartrate is at 148 but my placenta is on top of the baby? This will be my 4th pregnancy and I have never had this with my girls. Just wondering if this has happened to any of you or not? Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Re: Placenta Question

  • I think you mean (or the Dr.) an anterior placenta. This is my third and I had never before until this one. At my 16 week appt Tuesday they couldn't find the HB either. I freaked out (had had nightmares about exact same senario, crazy I know) so he got out the US machine. Baby is fine but have an anterior placenta (which would pit in between baby and tummy) dr said it's normal and not a risk or anything. Only thing it might interfere with is a C-section. Then they just have to cut higher.

  • Lol yes I meant the doctor couldn't hear it. They gave us a picture and you can see it plain as day just hanging right ontop. Thanks so much for responding. And yes I will be having a c-section my previous 2 were (one emergency). So will the placenta move with the baby and go higher or just move around as baby gets bigger?

  • Honestly I am not sure. I haven't looked into it too much yet.

  • My placenta is anterior - it meant that for my amnio they had to go in a bit higher than they might have otherwise.  I was told that it is normal, and that the placenta will migrate as the womb expands, so you just can't tell where it will end up.  It can affect c-section, but isn't generally a risk.  The only downside seems to be feeling baby later.

  • Yes it will move, technically it isn't the placenta moving but your uterus growing. As your uterus grows your placenta moves... My doctor told me to think of it this way,he said picture a deflated balloon with a smiley face on it and blow up the balloon, as it expands the smiley face moves. That's what happens to our placenta as our uterus grows... There is no danger or issue with an anterior placenta.

  • I also have an anterior placenta (over to the right side). So did my SIL. She had to have an emergency caesar, and I believe that its placement was one of the few non complicated bits of her whole birthing experience.

I'm just into my 17th week now, and felt baby distinctively for the first time late last week.  I felt baby moving on the left side though... ie when it wasn't hiding behind the placenta... Which it seems to enjoy doing for most of its scans :P

  • I have one too....I think generally there are no added risks to having one.  I sort of am glad that I do have one because in the 3rd trimester baby kicks and pushes so hard on your belly it's almost painful.  Maybe the AP will soften those blows a little bit :)

  • Thank you all so much for the reassurance. For those of you that have it if you happen to roll onto your stomach while sleeping and then wake up toove does your stomach hurt at all. I have had three girls and this pregnancy is so different than the others. I know each one is different but I mean this one is way different. Also for those of you who have girls and boys do you notice a difference in the heart rate lower or higher? All my girls have been 155-160 and this one is 148 could that have anything to do with the placenta issue? Sorry so many dumb questions. Thanks for your help!!
