nbr, re houses

I thought I'd post this here to see what other parents that have LOs think.
One of the communities we're looking into buying a house has a municipal landfill that is no longer used, it is now a giant hill covered by grass.  DH wants to look at a couple houses that are about 1.5 miles from it.  I'm trying to find data on what is a safe distance to live from a landfill but can't really find anything. Anyone have any experience/advice with this?

Re: nbr, re houses

  • I just did a google search and they said it depends on the type of landfill. Since the landfill is not being used, I would say that 1.5 miles would be fine. As Fred stated, you won't be living on the landfill.

  • I'd only be concerned if you were going to have well water. If you were to have well water I'd probably research it more thoroughly to see where the aquifers are and which way any possible contamination from the landfill would flow.
