Pacifiers

We hadn't intended on using a pacifier - my mom didn't with me, my sister didn't with her kids. I don't have any other real reason, other than not using one means I don't have to wean him from a pacifier down the road.

I'm wondering - do/did you use one? Why or why not?

* We are having issues with gas/colic/crying/overactive sucking reflex, lots of weight gain - and I'm EBF.We're wondering if he's waking for other reasons at night (every 1.5 to 2 hours) and just nursing because I'm there.

Thanks for your input

Re: Pacifiers

  • We dont cuz lo won't take it, plus I don't really like them. We ebf, she sleeps well at night, she cluster feeds before bed so I feed her non stop from 7-9 then she is out, we Aldo swaddle her tight. Not sure if that helps

  • We did with DD1.  She took to one right away and really had the urge to suck. Taking it away from her was a pain!  In fact, she's only been without it for about a month (judge me if you must).  DD2 would not take one for the first month.  She wanted to suck but would only take her bottles...even if they were empty.  If she didn't have a bottle in her mouth, she was screaming.  We were very persistent and she finally started taking a pacifier.  It has helped a lot.  She will take almost any kind but the Wubanub seems to be the best for her.

  • C has the same issues and is super oral. I was against a pacifier because I didn't want him hooked but our pedi pointed out its a lot easier than cutting off his thumb. He won't take one and there are some days I just short of beg him

  • I never wanted to use one, and if we did we planned on weaning around 6 months. We tried to get DD to take one a few times just to see if it would help calm her down or put her to sleep but she didn't like them so she never had one :)

  • R took one as soon as she was born but I was very hesitant to giver her one. The nurses gave it to her when they took her for her hearing test and didn't tell me :/ but she takes it to fall asleep now and then spits it out when she is really out! The only bad thing about it so far is that she will wake up once a night just to suck on it for a minute then pass back out. I agree with pp that a suck suck (as we call it) is much easier to take away then a thumb!
  • We gave our son one because he thrusts his tongue really bad and had a hard time latching.  He is actually starting to ween himself off it on his own now.

  • We use one - the sucking really soothes DD and since I wasn't going to be a human pacifier, an actual pacifier was our other option.  Many times if she starts stirring in the middle of the night, I can pop it in her mouth and she'll go back to sleep for another hour or two (sometimes even longer).  When she's truly hungry, she wakes up anyway, so I trust that I'm not starving her or anything

  • from what we have learned, babies need to suck so around day 3 in the hospital they got them. I think I just felt bad for them they were both under stress, one in the special nursery and one baby sent off to another hospital for nicu time :( I thought it would help comfort them. They still like it now and then and at times when I feel like they are using my breasts as pacifiers I just slip the nipple out from them and give them a pacifier and they are happy as can be. They dont always have it nor do they always want it. they do reject it if they dont want it, at least mine do. I dont look forward to the wean factor but we'll get thru it. Its also supposed to cut down on sids. I rarely give them one to sleep though and if I do they usually drop it once they fall asleep anyhow. Our boys like it after they eat, I think it just settles them nicely. We were originally against them but the hospital, doc from nicu and our LC all said it wouldnt hurt nor cause nipple confusion so we just went with the flow, I dont regret it. do whats best for you and your LO

  • I did it int he hospital.  I brought the MAM brand with me and he uses it all the time.  I read it can help prevent SIDS.  He is breastfeed just fine and its easier to get rid of then a thumb

  • We use them bc it helps DS calm down when he's fighting sleep. Also it has been shown to reduce SIDS risk. We started with Soothie at about 1.5 weeks but have since changed to Nuk. We EBF and it hasn't been a problem.

  • We use one. We use it mostly at night and when we're out. At the hospital, we were told there was a correlation for a reduced risk of SIDS. It also relaxes her a little when she is trying to poop. She also sucked on her hands a lot, and we were not eager for her to become a thumb sucker. My sister suckerd her thumb until 4th grade. My mom tried everything to get her to stop, but she ended up stopping when she wanted.

  • We use one sometimes with DD.  I didn't want to but she loves sucking on her hands/fingers.  It soothes her when both

  • We use one sometimes with DD.  I didn't want to but she loves sucking on her hands/fingers.  It soothes her when nothing else works.  I'd rather she use the pacifier than her hands/thumb since the paci can be taken away.  We plan to try to stop using it completely by about 6 months.

  • We use it a little. DD is not a big fan but sometimes it will come her down for a little bit. She is not super attached to it so breaking the habit shouldn't be hard and it is better than her sucking her thumb since you can't take a thumb away.

  • DS#1 never really took one until he was at least 3 or 4 months old. I EBFed him for 2 months. Now with the twins, they always have them in! I don't know if it's because it's my 2nd time around and I don't care if they have pacis because I know they will use them anyway in the future (DS 1 loves them now, at 18 months) or if it's because there are 2 of them and I'll do anything for some peace and quiet. But I am not worried about it because my doc said not to worry unless they use them past 4 years old. She said it will not affect jaw or teeth development. It really does help them soothe themselves, so there's not really a reason to withhold it, unless you are worried about nipple confusion, since you are BF'ing.

  • Yes, we use it.

I have an oversupply and DS gets angry when the milk is still flowing and he wants to comfort suck. Not to mention when he overeats he gets a stomach ache and spits up a ton.
