Need Help asap UPDATED

LO is almost 5 weeks.  I just got streaks of blood in poop diaper....is that an emergency?  I know could mean milk allergy.  I did eliminate obvious milk and cheese, just not hidden dairy for about a week now.  He is on zantac and mylanta for bad reflux.  Do I call pedi now or its ok???  He hasnt had a single green poop diaper or mucousy poop

  • Don't panic!

Could you possibly have a little cut on one of your nipples?  Sometimes I get small cuts from pumping too much, and once DD spit up blood and I started to totally freak out.  Then I noticed I had a small cut during my next pumping sesh!

I had a friend who spent 3 days in Children's Hospital with her first LO because she had the same thing happen as you are, turns out she also had a small cut on her nipple.

  • No, I had that a few weeks ago, and the blood was digested when he spit it up so it was brownish,....this was bright red and my nips are acually fine.  I am PISSED though bc i just called my female pedi who I ADORE and she mentioned a milk allergy and that its an "easy" fix, and id have to stop breastfeeding......I told her that I also had the option of eliminated HIDDEN dairy as well as the obvious dairy.I already eliminated.  She was like, yes, you can, but it doesnt always work.  I will NOT stop unless my LO Health is at risk.  I was shocked she even said that!  She said to wait for one more blood poop and to save the diaper and she will test it to make sure it is blood.  I am so disappointed bc i thought things were finally turning around with all my BF issues

  • I am sorry! Hopefully eliminating the dairy works and solves the problem, I don't know much about it because DD has no food allergies as fas as I know.

You could try speaking to a LC they often have better more knowledgable advice than pedis about nursing, since that is what they specialize in.  I definitely would try talking to one.

  • Many babies who have a dairy allergy also have a soy allergy. Have you tried eliminating soy as well?  When I starte I eliminated both until things got better, then tried adding back soy. My LO is ok with the "hidden" soy, but absolutely no dairy and no soymilk, tofu, etc...

I dont eat tofu or soymilk...just almond milk..no cheese or yogurt or ice cream, etc.  Its the hidden dairy and soy that i am clueless about.  I need to research the ingredients to look for

kellymom has a list of hidden dairy and soy.

I think soy can be harder to eliminate, because it's in soooo many foods. and honestly it can sometimes be a bigger issue than milk, which is why your dr may say that "oh you can eliminate dairy, but it may not work."  yeah, certainly eliminating dairy may not work, cause it may be soy, or eggs or well anything a human could be allergic to, baby can be allergic to, eh?  So it's a matter of just figuring out what is the culprit and then eliminating it.

If poops have not been green, mucousy, slimy, no red ring at the anus, no fussy, no eczema, I would really doubt allergy.

But it could be a small tear in the rectum accounting for the blood if it's not digested looking brown blood....

I just hope it's something that will allow me to continue bf and thanks for the info!!!!

  • I found blood in DS diaper friday morn. It was just a little streak of it in the poop. Went to pedi and found out it was just a little tear in the rectum. I hope maybe that is all it is for your LO. I hope you keep BFing!

  • Through an elimination diet you should be able to do just fine. There is dairy in most breads (or soy) but if you eat fresh bread made at the bakery you should be fine. You can eat all fruits, veggies, meats and tons of carbs. It is an extremely healthy diet.

I honestly cannot believe your pedi told you that your baby would need formula. Try eliminating all dairy and soy and then after a couple of weeks (at least) add something back to your diet and see how it goes.

  • You definitely DO NOT need to stop BFing!!!  I may take some time to figure out, but I've been nursing my LO for about a year and a half while avoiding dairy, soy, eggs, and tomatoes.  My LO has multiple food intolerances.

But I do think you should remove ALL dairy from your diet, obvious dairy like you are and hidden dairy like casein, whey, etc, that can be found in many prepackaged foods, breads, baked goods, etc.  LOs can still react to hidden dairy, so it's important to remove it.

Also, like someone else said half of all babies who cannot tolerate dairy also cannot tolerate soy becuase their proteins are so similar. Be sure to read labels becauase you'd be surprised what has soy in it!

You may be able to find bread in the grocery store that does not have dairy/soy, look for Italian or French bread, but read the label.  Pretzels are usually safe.

You don't need to switch to formula while you're figuring out your diet.  I used my LOs symptoms as a compass for how I was doing,  YKWIM?

Hang in there!  Good luck, you're doing great :)
