what's the difference in wide neck vs standard bottles?

besides the obvious..

what's the benefit to wide neck bottles? I have large breasts and large nipples, so will the wide neck be more accomodating for switching between breast feeding at night and bottle feeding in the day?

  • I think they say bf babies do better with wide neck bottles. DS didn't care.. we had both. However I like the standard ones because they don't take up as much room  and fit in diaper bags a lot better.

  • The LC at the hospital recommended wide neck bottles when I BFed the first time.  I had already bought regular Dr. Brown bottles though and didn't have any problems.  I'd buy wide neck ones.

  • I've always heard that regular bottles work just fine. If you're breast feeding, they usually fit directly onto your pump, to make pumping easier. However, I have heard some formula mommy's say that they prefer wide neck.

*EDIT* Sorry, DH was bothering me and didn't let me finish my thought....formula mommy's prefer them because they are easier and less messy to put the formula in them.

  • I think it may be a matter of preference. I breastfed and DS preferred wide neck bottles. We used born free.

  • I breastfed and gave bottles and we used the wide neck ones.  Just as an FYI If you are planning on BFing only register for or purchase the slow flow nipples at first.  I did not know that BF babies were only suppose to use them and ended up with a ton of nipples I never opened.  Also, I have large nipples and DD had trouble at first latching.  The LC said that was the reason but by the next day she was a champ and I never had soreness etc.. so if that happens don't worry it will work itself out.  At first I was in tears thinking she would never latch because so many people stress about the first few hours being soooo important but guess what you are not doomed if it does not work at first.

  • Some of it will depend on your LO's preference.  We tried every bottle out there with DS, because he really didn't like bottles at all.
