Postpartum Depression

Paxil?

I was diagnosed with PPD/PPA, and was prescribed Zoloft about 3 weeks ago. I started feeling worse, as far as anxiety goes... and my Dr. switched me to Paxil. I am breastfeeding, and want to know if anyone has experience with Paxil while breastfeeding? Also, side effects? Did it work for you? TIA

Re: Paxil?

  • They are supposed to be about the same breast feeding wise. However, if Zoloft made your anxiety worse I wouldn't be surprised if Paxil does the same. There are other options you should consider. Can you see a psych instead of an OB or regular Doc?

  • I'm on Paxil now, switched from Lexapro. The Lex was giving me more side effects than I wanted and I was still having breakthrough anxiety.

I'm just on the 4th day of Paxil. I'm having some hand shaking and sweating again (same as I did with Lex) but hoping it eases. I haven't had any crazy anxiety, though..so hopefully it's doing a better job.

I was also on Paxil about a decade ago. I had started on Zoloft.. initially improved, but then got worse again. The Paxil worked great for me, though. Hoping the same thing happens this time.

As for breastfeeding, I haven't noticed any effect on my daughter. The studies on it showed that it does pass in small amounts into the BM, but the babies showed no serum levels at all.

  • I started taking Paxil 5 days ago, so far I already feel better. I am a bit foggy, one side effect is yawning and I can't stop, I'm also a little sweaty on occasion and have had a few headaches. Much better than when I took Zoloft a few years ago though, I could barely function on it. My doc said it was considered "safe" for breastfeeding.
