Question about Nursing Clothes

Hello everyone! I'm just popping over from June 2012 board, but had a few questions about nursing clothes. Motherhood is having a sale on nursing bras and I have some coupons I need to use... What are your recommendations for nursing bras/sleeping bras/etc?

I went to look the other night and the sales woman recommended having at least 4 nursing tanks and a couple nursing bras. She also recommended a sleep bra... I'm not going to buy everything, but I'd like to buy a few things with the coupons I have. Any advice on what is worth the money and what I can skip? TIA!!

Re: Question about Nursing Clothes

  • To me, it makes a difference if you plan to work or SAH.  I worked with #1 and I wanted nursing bras that looked cute with a little shirt at work (but still accessable so I could pump at work).

I SAH now and did when #2 & #3 were born, so I loved in nursing tanks - the little girls never took bottles either.

    I had a couple nursing tanks/sleep bras with #1 - I leaked horribly if I didn't wear a bra at all times.

  • It'll depend on what you find you like at the time, so I wouldn't buy too much ahead of time. I'd get maybe two nursing bras and one tank (no way would I get 4 tanks ahead of time! I bought two, didn't really like them for nursing as well as bras, and hardly ever used them.) Also, two sleep bras. The sleep bras are easiest, I think, bc fit doesn't matter as much. The bras are more difficult. Personally I love Bravado and won't wear anything else. They are pricey - $50-$60 each - but worth it. I've got four, but started with two in the size I'd need while DD was a newborn; later I got the other two, in smaller sizes. They are super comfy and their clip is the best - sit in the dressing room and try to clip and unclip the bra with one hand - pretend you're holding a crying baby in the other - and see if you can do it. (I'm talking about the nursing clip, not the back.) I also have a Medela nursing bra but it needs two hands to close up which I never had! I've also got two Motherhood brand, and I hate them - the band around the rip cage isn't flexible enough (your breasts will grow and shrink so much in a day, you need to be comfortable), and they are hard to unfasten and fasten for nursing. So, I think the higher end bras are worth the money.

  • I wear my nursing tanks every day. My bras just sit in the drawer. I have Bravado tanks that fit me well, though, and they have proper support. A shelf bra wouldn't do it. Get 1 or 2 in case you don't like whatever brand you get at Motherhood.

I wear a sleep bra every night. In the beginning, it held the breast pads in place and was very necessary. It's a good thing to buy ahead because it doesn't have to fit as well. Your size will increase when your milk comes in (and then probably slowly decrease after 4-6 months or so).

  • Everyone is different, I had 6 tanks and wore them every day for 2 years and again now, I got another for christmas.  I have a few bras that I wear to work - same clasp as my Freestyle hands set up- but they come off when I walk in the door.  I would not buy nursing bras before your milk comes in then settles into your new size, even then I have the Medela bras which stretch since I am larger in the mornings.  I don't have special "nursing shirts" I just wear a  tank and a regular shirt over so it gets pulled up and my belly is always covered.  I sleep in the tank from that evening.
5/08- blighted ovum, spont ab; 2/20/09- epi, VAVD, Girl! breastfed 24mo; 10/10- blighted ovum, spon ab; 12/10- no fetal pole, Cytotec; 11/20/11- unmedicated SVD, Girl! breastfed 18mo; 11/7/13- unmedicated SVD, breastfed 18mo; 2/11/16- unmedicated SVD, exclusively pumping to at least a year.

  • If you're well-endowed, I would invest in expensive nursing bras. I'm a 38 J.

I bought Bravado tanks and they ended up not giving me enough support. I bought two Bravado nursing bras that didn't work out either. They're the right size but I looked like I was carrying two low cantaloupes out front. One of them is a nice sleeping bra. The other is just awful. I think I wasted well over $100.

I ended up going online and purchasing an Elomi nursing bra and it is much better. Elomi is a British brand so the sizes are a little different.
