Reflux or not?

Reflux mamas - how did you and the pedi know it was reflux? I don't know if he is just over eating a lot and spitting up, or something more. It is way more volume than I remember with Ellie, and sometimes it is right after eating and sometimes it is way later so the milk is all curdled. Sometimes it is so much it comes out his nose too. He does have the painful high pitched screaming which I don't know is from reflux pain or trapped gas pain. But we can't lay him flat when it is like that - either have to hold him or put him in the bouncer. We are going to try mylicon this week bc we can usually get a burp out but it can take about 30 minutes of screaming while we burp him.

Re: Reflux or not?

  • B spit up every time we touched him- he never really seemed like he was in pain and he was gaining weight so the Dr said he was fine. They asked if he would arch his back when he would scream after eating- so I guess that's something to look for too.

Oh and N used to have spit up come out her nose. It's the worst! They look so upset!

  • Evan spit up....A LOT....arched his back, etc.  We started him on Zantac, keeping him upright 30 min. after feedings and he was much more comfortable, but still spit up a ton until he was 1.

Andrew just cried and cried.  He had colic as well.  Sleeping on his belly and Zantac helped him too ( we never had to keep him up after feedings).  Both boys did awesome on Enfamil AR, so we just figured with all of the above, that they had reflux.

  • Ryan never spit up.  But he would often arch his back a pull off when he was nursing.  He had a few other signs as well, but since he never spit up I wasn't sure if it was reflux or not until I heard someone mention silent reflux.  Turns out, that's exactly what the pedi diagnosed it as and he did fine on meds after that.

  • I thought it was just gas until I mentioned grunting to a friend of mine. She asked unfit was grunting or clearing the throat, and it sounded just like he was clearing his throat all the time. We had that, the arched back scream after feedings, and a lot of spit up.

I ,  it sounded just like he was clearing his throat all the time.

OMG J does this before she starts crying!  Is that a sign of reflux?

  • That sounds just like Audrey.  High pitched crying, lots of spit up, couldn't lie flat.  Zantac didn't work for her but she's done great on Prevacid.  She still spits up some but w/o the pain.  The Rock-N-Play was a wonderful thing for her to sleep in, too!

This was us too except Callie does spit up just not always a lot. She also does this gasping for air sound like she can't breathe which scares me to death. Our Ped told us that's her body's way of protecting itself from the acid, he said its her throat shutting off for a second to prevent the acid from coming up. She also has the horrible painful cries and back arching. She's on meds now which seem to have worked some.

  • Yup...there was also a lot of grunting, esp through the night by A in the beginning.

  • that sounds like it to me.  When Sophia went for her 1 month appt the dr saw curdled milk in her nose.  She also spit up a lot. But the dr wanted to hear that she would soak my shirt with her spit up. She was generally crabby.  They wanted to wait until her 2 month appt to do anything.  I went home to my parents house later that same week and she was so miserable. I decided I didn't want to wait and see. I called the dr and asked for a Rx.  She was put on the lowest dose of zantac.  Within 24 hours she was better.  We could tell if we missed her dose b/c she would be miserable.

If you think it is something more have it checked out.  One thing I learned especially with Sophia is to trust your gut.  It is usually right

  • Thanks guys. He pulls back while nursing, but I don't think he arches his back. His next appt is feb 10, so I will just wait till then and in the meantime try mylicon and gripe water and see if one of those help first.
  • Oh, and I have almost finished my antibiotic from the mastitis so maybe that is bothering him
