Breastfeeding

? about BFing and antibiotics.

My DD and I both have bronchitis and were given antibiotics. Mine was the normal z pack and I took the first 2 yesterday then one today. Since this morning when I try and feed my DD she gets upset and spits the milk out. So my question is can antibiotics make your milk taste bad? She is 17 months and has always been great at BFing.

  • It might make your milk taste different. I haven't needed an antibiotic while nursing, but I'm sure you told your dr. that your nursing so the meds are safe. It's probably just changed the taste a bit. I'm sure it will go back to normal when the dosage is up.

  • I recently had bronchitis too and my DS had a major ear infection along with being congested. We both received meds. He did spit up just a bit more than normal, however he was fine. A few times (2-3 mornings) he refused to nurse or eat. It will go back to normal. I learned to nurse him, then take my meds and it worked. Good lick and feel better!

  • Anything you put in your body has the potential of effecting your milk and your LO. I was on an antibiotic for mastitis and it made DS very fussy; he wouldn't sleep for more than 20 minutes, ate constantly, gassy and cried ALOT. Within 24 hours of taking the last pill he was back to the sweet angel that he is normally! My Dr. had to prescribe a different antibiotic.

Good Luck, and hope you feel better!
