Texas Maternity/Prenatal Insurance?

Just found out I'm expecting and I am looking for individual insurance that will cover visits and the delivery in Texas (DFW area).  I am finding that all the major companies like BCBS and United don't cover maternity or pregnancy.  Any suggestions?

  • congratulations. =)

I am covered by United through my job and they have pretty comprehensive coverage. I'm certainly no insurance buff, but surely there is some kind of plan that will cover you. I'm on their Choice Plus 90 (PPO) plan if that helps.

  • From what I've heard, it's usually pretty difficult to find an individual maternity policy if you're not covered by a group (i.e. work) plan. I think you can find individual STD policies, but those usually have to be in place for X number of months before you get pregnant.

  • hi,

first, congratulations!  i scrolled back to look for something totally unrelated but i think i can answer your question if you haven't already.

if you do not get insurance through a group plan, you cannot get maternity in the state of texas.  it is not even available for purchase. it's insane and should be illegal, but it is part of pending obamacare.  the only option is to pay out of pocket (most docs and hospitals will give you a reduced rate) OR, if you qualify, you can get medicaid or CHIP.  CHIP requires you to not already have insurance.  medicaid does not.  i just applied for medicaid for pregnant women today.

all privately purchased insurance plans no longer have maternity, but the states decide whether it can be purchased as a rider or not.  and in texas, we cannot.  like i said, this kind of prohibition should be illegal!

    good luck!
