Yaz and heart palpitations?

I've had heart palpitations occur pretty regularly for the past couple of months. My Dr said that my EKG and heart U/S were fine, but I still have to do a halter monitor next week to check for irregilar heartbeat.

Since I'm an avid symptom googler, I noticed that "heart palpitation" frequently comes up along with Yaz bc pills. So I'm kind of freaked out because I'm on them. Is this a common side effect? Did anyone else experience this while on the pill?

This is probably a very subjective question, but are there any bc pills out there that are considered "safer" then others? At least as far as heart health is concerned?

Re: Yaz and heart palpitations?

  • I thought YAZ was taken off the market due to severe side effects? My doctor took me off of YAZ awhile back because he told me it was dangerous. I'm on Beyaz now. I think they all have side effects & everyone reacts to the differently. I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen for 10 years & it never gave me any problems till about year 10. Call your doctor & ask them to call you in something different. I shouldn't be a big deal.

  • I also suffer from heart palpitations and because my dad has cardiomyopathy, I have had all the tests. What kind of palpitations do you have? By that, I mean what does it feel like when you have them? I get something called pre-ventricular contractions, which feels like my heart skips a beat or like its fluttering in my chest. They really used to scare me but after an EKG, holter monitor twice, and an echocardiogram they have told me that they are harmless and many people get them. I also have episodes where my heart will take off really fast for about a minute. Basically, the doctor said if my heart is structurally normal that these arrhythmias won't hurt me. I was told there are many triggers for these things and the trick is to figure out which ones aggravate them. In my experience, certain BC pills DEFINITELY trigger mine. I have never been on Yaz but I have had to switch several times because some pills would make my palpitations way worse. There are also things like caffeine, MSG in foods, and being over tired that set mine off. I try to avoid most of those things and I get them way less . I still get a few episodes every day but now that I know they're harmless, I just shrug it off. If you haven't had problems until you've been on this BC, I would try switching and see if it makes a difference. Good luck!
  • It looks like Yaz is getting sued every year for either false advertizing or for failing to report side effects properly. I will definitely call my OB on Monday.

I took Ortho Tri Cyclen starting high school through my college years. I felt fine, but it killed my drive. (which was probably a wonderful thing at that age). Maybe I'll try it again and hope that I don't turn into a unich.

Are mini pills only prescribed for BFing Moms?

    Maybe try Ortho-Low

Beyaz is working great for me right now. LoEstrin Fe also worked well for me. Ask for a free sample of something  :)

My palpitations have the same symptoms as yours. Flutters in my chest, I take a big gasp of air and they go away. It happens more with strenuous exercise and stress. For the past month or two it's been happeneing more and it happens to perfectly coincide with my getting on Yaz. Also, I took up drinking coffee at the ripe old age of 33. All of a sudden it tastes great to me. I stopped drinking it a week ago to see if it curbs the flutters. I still get them.

Also like you mentioned I get the random bouts of rapid heart rate. My general practitioner doesn't know I'm on Yaz, so the only thing she could come up with after all the tests is anxiety. I'm going to try another BC pill as soon as I talk to my OB.

YOu mentioned that you've tried several bc pills, which one did you end up settling on if you don't mind me asking?

I'd try the Ortho and LoEstrin, but I think I'll stay away from Beyaz. It has the same form of progesterone as Yaz, called Drosperinone. The FDA is reviewing all the pills that contain it right now for safety. This is the list of pills I found that contain it:

Beyaz, Safyral, Gianvi, Loryna, Ocella, Syeda, and Zarah.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes mine occur frequently with strenuous exercise too. It used to freak me out and make me stop, but now I just push through it. As far as anxiety, I do happen to have an anxiety disorder and have been on medication for it for a year. I guess the frequency of them have slowed down but I still get them evey day so anxiety isn't the cause for me, but it does make them worse. It's the same with caffeine too. Also, I was told coughing or taking a deep breath. An stop the rapid beats as its a neurological response. Seems to work for me. I ended up switching to a pill called Marvelon. It's much older and doesn't have the synthetic progesterone that a lot of the newer ones have. It also cured my breakthrough bleeding. I love it. If you google "PVC" or "SVT" you will get a lot of info about these arrhythmias. It will also set your mind at ease. I apologize for the lack of paragraphs, I'm posting from my iPhone and it doesn't let me use them!
  • I was on orthotricyclen for 6 yrs and forgot what it was like to not have severe mood swings, yeast infections, etc. If you didn't have a good experience with it, why go back?

The NuvaRing worked really, really great for me. And when I wanted to, I got OBC and PG in 1 mo with DD. It's a nice, low-dose option if that is what your doctor would recommend.

Like I said, I read too much crap online. I'm scared of the NuvaRing because of this article in Marie Claire:

I was trying to figure out what all of the names for progesterone meant. I had no clue there was a pil with a non-synthetic version. So thanks for mentioning Marvelon. The numbers of BC pills out there is overwhelming. I have no clue what to look for as far as the different types of progesterone go. So I'll ask for Marvelon or something else without the synthetic progesterone.

I wish my periods were regular enough to skip the pill altogether. The only reason I went on it is to regulate my periods because I was getting them every 2 weeks. So at this point I felt like I had to choose between bleeding to death or having heart problems. Hopefully, the new pill will work.

Thanks so much for the info!
