Baby Thermometers

Just wondering what thermometers people are using?  Is it worth it to splurge for the electronic expensive ones like the Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer?

Re: Baby Thermometers

  • I got one of those digital ones that can used in butt, ear and mouth because my brother is a new and said you have to take a baby temp in the little behind. It was like 35 dolalrs

  • I have read that the most reliable is the rectal followed by taking it in the armpit. We got a thermometer at target that has interchangeable heads for rectal, oral, and armpit.

  • I've heard the artery thermometer is great, but we ended up just getting the vicks rectal thermometer. I hear most pediatricians want to know rectal temp and they're so much less expensive. I think even if I did splurge, I would still keep the rectal one on hand in case someone couldn't use it, the batteries died, it broke, etc. Just FYI, my friend registered for the artery thermometer and I got it for her baby shower. She doesn't use it b/c she doesn't know how. Her husband does though. Tried to show her, but I guess she just didn't get it. Huh?

  • DH is an ER doctor, and he said that for a really sick baby, the only temperature he trusts is rectal. Someone gave us a really expensive ear thermometer for our shower, and DH had me return it because he said that he wouldn't trust it if our baby gets a fever.

  • At my baby shower at work today, someone gave us a pacifier thermometer.

  • I bought the Vick's rectal thermometer for use right now.  I also have the Braun ear thermometer (forget the exact model) that we got at m shower.  I'll use that one once LO is older.  I tried it on myself and it seemed pretty accurate compared to the old thermometer I have.

  • I love the vicks one.  It is fast, easy to read, and has colors (green, yellow, red) to help you determine if the temp is a concern.

  • We went through a ton of thermometers... rectal, digital, armpit, pacifier... we finally settled on the exergen temporal thermometer which I absolutely love. It seems to work really well too considering I took DD's temperature right before we went to the Dr and when we got to the Dr's office it was the same. I also love that we can use it when the kids are asleep and they don't even have to wake up. They sell them at Costco where I think they are a little cheaper. I definitely recommend it.

  • I got one of those nice ones to use on forehead or ear for my baby shower...and the stupid thing doesn't work worth a crap.  Temperature changes every time you do it.

  • You should use a rectal for the first year since they are the most accurate.  After that, get something easy to use because they won't sit still long for you to take a temp.   I got the temporal one you mentioned on black Friday for $25 and love it!  Totally worth it if you can find it on sale.

  • We got a rectal and an exorgen temporal.  We had planned on using the rectal for when he is very young and the temporal when he gets older.  That being said, the hospital where I will deliver actually now advises against the use of rectals.  They have seen too many people put them in a bit too far.  Also, they said that the temporals are almost always right on with the rectals.  So, be careful! :)

  • I ended up getting the exergen temporal thermometer.  It was much cheaper at Walmart.  The price was $33.00 compared to $49.99 at BRU.  A good savings.
