Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Poll: Financial clusterfuucks

I'm curious; we all know the economy sucks. Who has been directly affected by it and how? How are you handling the holidays if you are affected?

As for myself: my DH was laid off 3 days before DD was born, therefore making it not possible to keep our house. We do have a savings, but not enough to make it more than a few months. The house is on the market for a short sale and on Monday we are moving back home to WI (from VA). It's been tough to deal with at the same as DD being born, obviously.

Of course, we bought the damn house and got pg back when we were told his company was secure and stable. Asshats.

Re: Poll: Financial clusterfuucks

  • well i am in banking and dh sells cars. :) both areas being effected by the economy...and dh lost his job. (the one he had before selling cars)

  • Gosh, I am really sorry.:(
  • I am so sorry to hear that.  We haven't been affected so far (knock on wood).  He is the only person at his company that does what he does and I work for 2 partners in a law firm so I won't go before others do.
  • I was laid off on my last day of maternity leave back in August. With my unemployment and DH's OT we've just barely been getting by. Then DH came home from work on Monday with the news that his company is cutting all overtime. This means a loss of $600 a month. Things are beyond tight.

  • I'm so sorry.  I can honestly say that there's not one person I know of who hasn't been impacted by this awful economy in some form or another.  We're definitely hanging on by the skin of our teeth lately, and it really sucks!  I have no idea what we're going to do for Christmas.  I'm just trying to kind of put it out of my mind right now so I can, I dunno, function.
  • Lets see.. I owe about 80K more than whar my house is worth now and we have lost 110K in our retirement acct.
  • We haven't felt the pinch yet - although that is very surprising. My DH owns a flooring company and they are still pretty busy. I work for a large accounting firm, and we just went through a layoff but I got to keep my job. I'm sure the flooring business will slowly decline soon :(
  • DH is in finance and took a crappy salary when he started last year (went to get his MBA full time to sstruggled and went into major debt). Took a job assuming he would get a nice raise/bonus this year and they are getting nothing. I work in retail and busines sucks everywhere so we are getting no bonuses/raises either. Looks like we are going to spend another year struggling and not saving a dime (hopefully we can make it because we spend most of our savings while I was on maternity leave).

  • Wow. I am really sorry to hear about your situation. That would be really difficult.

My husband is in the Air Force, and while I have mixed emotions about being a military wife, I am grateful for the job stability.

  • We haven't felt it yet. DH works for a software company that is doing well (they make software for hospital catering companies/libraries/etc.). I however am buckling down for the worst. I am one of 3 music teachers at my school, and the last hired (4 years ago). They probably won't get rid of me outright next year (I am the only instrumentalist and I have over 100 students when the chorus/HS band teacher has a total of 45) but they will probably cut me back to 80%, which we can live with. After that, who knows. I am only continuing to work there because insurance through my work is better/cheaper than DH's.
  • I worked for an international intermodal co. and quit in October to be a SAHM and we just planned on pinching pennies. DH runs/owns a tennis club his grandpa built in 1975. Yeah....business is NOT booming. The 1st thing people cut is their work out memberships it seems. He's lucky to have 12 people a day in using the fitness room. He's had to use his line of credit to make payroll and they're talking about selling the business. I have started working saturdays at the club #1 because he needed it filled #2 it'll bring more $ for us into the home #3 if the club is short money he can hold off a week or two on our paychecks. Alot of people think because we own such a large business we haev $ but it's just not the case. It's a $ pit in a bad area where thug kids keep damaging the a/c units ($20,000 each) in the summer and people steal the weights and damage the locker rooms. As soon as we get ahead, we're out again. when I worked in an office I made more $ then DH and he owns his own business. Sad.

  • 401K is down.  We are lucky that we aren't at retirement age.  I really feel for them.
  • Well, if DH really quits his job like he emailed me, yep we'll be in a huge financial clusterfuuck.  I'm really sorry to hear about you DH being laid off and having to sell your house.
  • DH was laid off for three weeks in October after having his hours cut dramatically for weeks before.  He's still laid off now, but at least he found a job to make up for not working.  Thankfully we were able to refinance our house before the crappiness of the economy hit our household.

Christmas is going to suck.  I tried to talk to DH's family about gifts and not wanting to do for adults, but focusing on kids.  They wouldn't hear of it.  DH's uncle's g/f said "Adults like Christmas, too."  (What's better is DH, uncle, and FIL are all working for the same company AND laid off.  I don't get why they couldn't agree with me on this).  So now I'm stuck trying to figure out how to buy for all of them, and I feel like I have to short change my household to take care of them.  :'( I hate people who aren't understanding. At least my DH was understanding.  Looks like board games for families/households; they're cheap and push for family time.  I'm ranting again...

  • Yup, thought we had life by the horns a year ago, not rich but making it and being somewhat comfortable. DH has been out of work for some time and people are laying off not hiring for his trade of heating and cooling. Our paper has seven jobs listed for employment. SEVEN! I work for a realtor as well as processing loans, so I'm scared. We are behind on the house and other bills since I didn't have paid maternity of any sort. Looks like we'll have to move. We are still waiting to hear from the bank to see if they'll work with us. Looks like we could be joining the millions in foreclosure. Feel like failures but seriously there are MILLIONS in our position. Our area was booming when we moved here. So sad. But grateful we have a healthy beautiful daughter. Good Luck to everyone struggling.

  • We're about 60 grand upside down on our stupid house. I honestly think I might not have a job by the end of next week, and if I am lucky enough to make it through this round of layoffs, I will definitely be receiving a pay cut for Christmas this year.

  • We are starting to feel it. DH is a first year attorney and we recently relocated for his new job. He isn't making much at this firm. The firm is struggling and they won't be giving bonuses this year. I've been looking for a job and the job market is horrible right now. We've blown through our savings trying to pay for law school loans and things for the baby.

I've decided that we aren't buying Christmas presents this year. I am going to frame DS's picture and put DS's hand and foot print around the border of the picture. ?

    ??

  • DH is a nurse so not worried about him.  I work for a national non-profit and donations are definitely down.  Our CEO just announced a hiring freeze on Monday and said "We might have to make deeper cuts."  I have no idea what that means but I am freaking out.

I have been looking for a new job since June and it's slim pickens.

  • My husband's job is pretty safe for now.  He works in retail and his store is doing good.

I work for a company that has been around for about 150 years.  I don't see the company failing but that doesn't mean they won't make cuts.
