Anyone else experience this or know why it happens?

Sometimes when my LO wakes up from his naps he screams and I mean as soon as he gets up it starts and doesn't stop for anywhere from 15-30 minutes. This is a different scream he is upset and mad but idk how to explain the scream he always has tears and is usually read from being mad and crying. I can do all kinds of stuff and nothing calms him down. Now he wakes up and cries anytime he is in his bed but this is different and lasts for way too long.

  • DS did this off and on for a loooong time (basically until he stopped napping). He would just wake up inconsolable....didn't matter how long or short the nap was. It could take 20 minutes to calm him down. It wasn't every time, maybe 50%. his pedi seemed to think he just had "trouble with sleep transitions". Who knows?

  • How often does it happen? Is it often after a bad nights' sleep or a delayed nap? Does sleepwalking run in your family? You may want to look into night terrors. From my experience, pedis aren't well versed on it, so do your own research.  It's hard to get a true diagnosis since the baby can't talk about it, but it will at least give you some peace of mind if you think that's what the issue is.

I am pretty sure we're dealing with them.  Sometimes it's once a week, sometimes once a month, sometimes a few times in a week.... but P will wake up screaming "like he's on fire"  His eyes are open and teary, but he doesn't look or act like he's awake.  It's like he's in a daze. He screams and flails uncontrollably until he falls back to sleep or "fully" wakes up and then he's completely fine and acts normal.

The first few times I though he was sick. Then I started thinking he was posessed (LOL) but someone mentioned night terrors. My mom and brother are life-long sleep walkers and apparently it's related- and hereditary.  Fun, fun....

  • Are you sure he is awake?  Will he look at your and make eye contact, or is he looking through you?  DS did this from 6 months to 4 years, and it was night terrors.  We finally learned that it was better to talk to him soothingly, and pat his back until he slowly came out of it himself, and to not pick him up or move him.  Trying anything else made it last longer, and appear much more intense.    Now DS only does it if he's sick or WAY overtired, thank goodness.

  • Thanks ladies!! He has been doing this for a while I just don't know why and haven really noticed a pattern. Today it was normal nap time although he didnt sleep as long as usual. This happens like most of you said just randomly some weeks more than others and some not at all. I will do some reading on night terrors I was wondering if that was it. I'm not sure if he is looking at me or through me I will have to pay attention to that next time. Thanks again for the info.
  • My DD does this from time to time now and used to do it more often about a year ago. Especially if she naps late in the day. For us she was just really really cranky.
  • DD1 did that for a long time when she woke up from naps. It was like she was super crabby from waking up and would throw a long 20 minute tantrum. Fun. She often does it when she first wakes up in the morning too. I basically can't talk to her for a good 10 minutes after she wakes up or it sets her off...so I let her do her thing and wake up fully.

DD2 has recently started doing it too... mainly if I wake her up from her nap (if she sleeps past 4). I just assumed it was a normal thing for some kids. And lucky me I get it with both girls ;)
