Trouble TTC

How to deal with quuestions....

We had a baby shower at work today and everyone kept asking me when I was going to have a baby and making comments about it being my turn next. It took everything in me not to burst into tears. How do you deal with these questions and comments?

  • I respond with, "9 months after I get pregnant."  Works like a charm every time.

I think this is going to be my new answer. Usually, I just tell the individual or persons that DH and I are not interested right now. Two days ago, I had a coworker (whom I hardly know), ask when I was going to start a family. I seriously wanted to reach across my desk and smack her because A. That's such a personal question and B. She doesn't even know me!

I know how you feel. Other people's questioning is a product of ignorance to IFand the emotions and time invovled.  We have to try really hard to remember that...it sucks though!

  • It usually depends on how many times said person has asked as to whether or not I'll be snarky. Usually I just tell people that I'll let them know when it happens or it's really none of their business.

  • I have decided to start being honest and to tell people that we are struggling with IF, without getting into details. Since then, I have only had one person ask and they were a perfect angel when their response was "I'm sorry". Before that, My standard reply was "Your guess is as good as mine." That usually did the trick. I have also used the "About 9 months after I get pregnant" line. Or, simply said that I don't know. I'm so sorry you had to struggle through the work baby shower today. I have been there. Not fun!

    I've used this.

MH's reply is, "We're working on it"..

Mine?  "Whenever we can" or "whenever it works" and an FU look.

When people ask if I have kids, my answer is, "NOPE!".. shuts them up quick because they don't want to ask anymore.

I really liked this one but one time some smart @$$ said, "Well, you know babies don't always wait 9 months, they come when they're ready!" (My response in my head was, "No s*&t Sherlock!")

My new one is, "That is a question I don't have an answer to." It seems to work pretty well.

I love this. I always say we're waiting until I'm done with grad school, but since that excuse will run out in May, I may have to start using your response!

  • "Whenever it works"  LMAO.  That is both truthful and a response that warrants the person asking to shut the heck up.  I'm definitely going to use this.

  • DH and i recently decided to be very open with our struggles.  it's just too emotionally taxing for us to keep it to ourselves.  we don't run around yelling it from roof tops, but if someone asks, we tell them we've been trying for a year and a half with no luck and are see a dr to get answers.  word has since gotten out and the questions have stopped.  it works for us.

  • This question drives me nuts because it is intrusive either way whether someone is TTC or not TTC.  I think, "I'll let you know when I'm pregnant" (repeat if necessary) is the way to go.  Good luck!
  • I usually respond with 'why do you ask?'  Gives no information and most people pick up on the fact that their question/prying was rude, without being rude yourself.  This is always a hard situation, even with a prepared response - good to you for getting through it.

I have started using this, too, combined with a pointed look on my face.  People need to realize this is not an appropriate question.

Other responses I have used, "It turns out that neither getting pregnant nor staying pregnant has been easy for us, so we don't know."  "Hopefully 9 months after we get pregnant."  "Well, I don't have an answer to that, but I'll be sure to let you know when it happens!"

I usually say something along those lines. It shuts them up fast.
