NST one baby not reactive enough?

ugh, I just had my first NST today (at the hospital) and they couldn't get both on the monitor.  So finally they got both on the monitor (one is in front of the other) and they did the test and said it looks good and let me go back to work.  Now the OB called and I have to go in again tonight and have the test again.

Thing is the nurses said with twins it's hit or miss whether they are going to both cooperate or not.  Should I be worried?  I hope they don't admit me.  Anyone else have this happen?  Any advice to get both to be reactive?  Before the test today I drank some juice.

Re: NST one baby not reactive enough?

  • I think I had a total of 10 NST's and Baby A (my boy) almost never passed.  He was perfectly fine, just not very reactive.  And in my experience, it's a pain in the ass to get them both on the monitors and to get them to stay on the monitors.  I drank coffeee before them, had candy, the nurse yelled at my stomach to get them moving, I tried jiggling them around with my hands, by clenching and unclenching my stomach muscles....yeah, he still only reacted when he wanted to.   On the days he 'failed' the NST, they gave me an ultrasound to check on him and there was never a problem.

  • I had an nst yesterday and they couldn't get baby a on the monitor for very long at all.  They sent me across the hall and did a biophysical profile using an ultrasound.
  • thanks for the reply mrscalkins!  it's the boy that's not very reactive.  I really don't think that he'll miraculously behave tonight.  They actually did do an u/s at the test today to find the heartbeat.  I hope they don't do this to me every time I go.  The Dr that called me isn't my favorite and the one she consulted with is really not my favorite but the one that will be in L&D tonight is my favorite!  Hopefully he'll tell me good things!
  • Yikes. Why did you have  a NST, Fancy?
  • They generally do 1 NST with a singleton but with twins they start them at 32 weeks once a week and then once I hit 34 weeks it's twice a week.  It's just a way to monitor their activeness.  A lot of girls on here had them regularly towards the end of their twin pregnancies.  I have to have them done at the Hospital because the OB's office only has one monitor and I guess they need to be monitored together.

It's really preventative.  I keep telling myself this is a good thing that they are being cautious.

But both babies have strong heartbeats, one is in the 160's and the other is in the 140's.

  • Like a pp, I had TONS of those, and my baby girl was never cooperative. They would usually keep trying with juice and food for a while, then finally send me over for a biophysical profile ultrasound.

Both my babies are fine. I'm guessing they just want to be safe.

The NST's need to be done with as many monitors as there are babies to ensure that you are actually monitoring the heart rates of both babies.  And yeah, you'll have a lot of them if you're having multiples. (at least, imo, you should be)  I was lucky in that everything was located right in my doctor's office and I never had to go to the hospital for any seperate testing, he was able to handle all of it in house, since a non-passing test meant an ultrasound.

I definitely woudn't be too concerned if you have a few where one of the babies is not reactive enough, especially if your dr is following up with an ultrasound to double check the heartbeat.  My baby boy was never very active in the morning.  If I had them done at night, they would have gotten quite the show.  Now Maggie...there was a different story.  The nurses all called her wiggle worm because she would squirm away from the monitors, kick, twist etc.

  • At my current OB's office, they do a BPP when they do the u/s instead of an NST. At my prospective new OB's office, he does the u/s himself. He says he doesn't do an official BPP, that "the things you're checking for you can all just look for on u/s" so I guess he doesn't do the official counts. But he said they were both moving a lot, practicing breathing, blood flow was fine, etc.

  • Huh. Neither my OB nor my perinatologist has mentioned it to me.  I can vouch for their activeness myself though..BOY do they move all the time!

Oh, maybe its because I get ultrasounds a lot?  I was getting them every 4 weeks, this time its 3 weeks. I wonder if my peri will start having me come in for u/s more frequently.
