Still trying to find my boys's names that would go with their last name: Ferreira

hello, me and my husband do not seem to agree with the twin boys's names. We like Matthew but I'm not sure what would go with our last name:Ferreira.

I originally wanted a Latin/Portuguese name to go with Ferreira but everyone keeps telling me the names are hard to pronounce, so I guess we'll pick an American name that goes with the last name. Any suggestions? Thanks :-)

  • I don't see anything wrong with Matthew Ferreira?  FWIW, I'm not sure what sorts of latin names are "hard to pronounce"?

  • I think Matthew sounds wonderful with your last name (if I'm pornouncing it correctly).  If you love the harder to pronounce names, just weigh what more important to you and your babies, the specialness of the name vs. how much they'll have to correct the pronunciation and spelling.

FWIW, I LOVE "different" names (one of my top choices was Donovan) but all of mine have very "normal" names - James Ryan, Jacob Louis, William Thomas, they're all family names so at least they have a special meaning.

  • My DH is from Uganda and has a long hyphenated name. It's always a pain getting it pronounced or spelled correctly. Because the last name was already going to be tough for the girls we decided to give them "english" first names and then give them Ugandan middle names. Everyone is different. That's just what worked for us. Your last name doesn't seem too tough though. And I'm not sure what first names you were thinking of that others are considering "hard to pronounce." I do like the sound of Matthew with your last name.

  • Hi girls, thanks for the suggestions. I was originally looking for a Latin name, such as Rodrigo, Thiago, Sebastian, but my hubby likes American names better so we agreed with Matthew and now we're trying to find the second name. I wish I could choose the names myself lol. He likes names that I don't and viceversa hehe
  • Oh yes. We had a boy name and a girl name picked when I got preggers and then when we found out it was twins (and twin girls no less) so commenced the battle on the second name. We didn't decide until the month I delivered - it was the only other name we kept coming back to in agreement. And we had to consult with his family to make sure we picked appropriate family names for their middle names - they had a specific naming convention for twins. But that ended up being way easier than picking the first names. Good luck. Whatever you pick will be perfect!

  • Could you do 1 American first name with a Latin middle, then 1 Latin first with an American middle?  I don't think Rodrigo or Sebastian are hard to pronounce at all.  Sebastian is actually becoming more and more popular.
  • You could always do a Latin first name, America middle and just call them by their MN's.

  • the names you said are not hard to pronounce at all.  how about Matteo (the latin version of matthew).  I love the name, but since I have to latin heritage, and we're actualy Jewish, didn't seem fitting to our son.

  • If you like Matthew, how about Mattias? I don't think that's hard to pronounce at all. I also like the suggestion of Sebastian.

  • Thank you, I'll try to convince my hubby lol...
  • ugh I feel your pain.  My name is Row-sheen spelled Roisin, when I moved to the states my name was murdered & it drove me nuts BUT that being said...When in Rome....how could I expect anyone to pronouce it differently unless they too were from Ireland.  My point being if you plan to raise your kids here in the  US then Matthew is a perfect name but if you plan on going to Portugal or parts of Southern America then a portuguese name will be great.  FWIW I named my babies with names that were pronounced easily based on spelling.
