Breastfeeding

Need some experienced advice

So I am new to this board and this is my first (of many, I'm sure) question.

My sister has 3 boys that are 3 and under. She BF all three until she became pg again and her supply diminished.  With all 3 boys, she had numerous thrush outbreaks.

I am pg with what will be my 1st living child (Yay, finally!!) and I am wondering if thrush is something that could also affect me the way it affected her.  In a nutshell, does it run in families?   Is there something I can do to prevent it?  I am sorry if these are dumb questions but I would really rather not follow in her footsteps when it comes to thrush!

TIA Ladies!

Re: Need some experienced advice

  • I nursed my daughter for over a year and never had thrush.  Then I started nursing my son last March and had three outbreaks of thrush in two months.  It is a yeast infection that can result from mother or baby using antibiotics or other reasons.  The important thing is to boil all binkies, nipples, bottles, pump parts, etc after every use and to use the medicine consistantly as long as the doctor tells you to - both on the baby's mouth and your nipples.  In my case, we ended up using a different medicine in the end and it cleared it up.  It does not run in families and it sounds like your sister just never got hers cleared up.  Congratulations on your baby and I hope that helped.

  • So far, I've had no problems with thrush. I've only had a couple yeast infections in my life, so maybe I'm just not a yeast-prone person.

If you think you might be, or if you're just plain paranoid after watching her struggle, you could take probiotic supplements. They're safe for breastfeeding.
