Baby weight loss question

Is it normal for a baby to lose weight when they become more mobile?  I thought it would be more that weight gain would just slow a bit.  But Nikolai has actually lost 4 ounces in the last 10 days.

Re: Baby weight loss question

  • I think so, but I'm not sure you should be concerned about 4 ounces. I think DS's poopies weigh more than 4 ounces and he doesn't poo every day.

  • I heard that it slows when they become mobile. LO's pedi said that gains are good, plateaus are normal, and losses are bad. Maybe it's just a fluctuation, and he will gain before his next appointment.

This. Especially depending on how mobile he is and how often he poops. :)

He actually just pooped this morning for the first time in close to a week.  It wasn't a lot though.  Up until now he has been gaining well.  Averaging about 1/2 oz a day.  It just sort of threw me off.  I'm not really concerned at this point, more just wondering.  We'll keep an eye on him for a week or two and see how it goes.

  • Our pedi told us Max would "lean out" and maybe lose a little once he starts crawling, so I wouldn't worry.

  • Ugh, I hope not...as it is, my LO is dropping on the charts and has been gaining a half lb a month. If he gains any slower, he'll fall off the charts completely. :(

  • Avery hasnt gained in almost 2 months. Pedi and GI specialist said this is normal since he is very active.

This, AND when looking at gains/losses looking over a longer period of time is much better. Something like 4oz can be as simple as he didn't nurse as much yesterday.

  • Thanks ladies!  I definitely will take today's weight with a grain of salt :)

  • I'm so glad you posted this question.  I've been so worried about L's lack of weight gain.  She's become so, so active in the past two months that she's barely putting on any weight.  I guess any gain is good, but she's only gained 12 oz in the past two months!!  She eats pretty well, but works it all off in her play time.  Being crazy active is a good sign, I guess.  She is growing length wise - about a little over an inch in the past two months.  I was having such anxiety about it, I'm so glad to hear that it's totally normal (DH will get a kick out of saying "I told you so!") Big Smile

  • DD's percentile has dropped on the charts but she has not lost. One week she only gained just over an ounce...she was sick too though.

Are your certain your supply is ok?

  • I'm not sure how common it is, but I think it's normal. I haven't weighed Gabby recently but her growth has definitely plateaued or dropped a bit; she's just all over the place now! As long as he's still happy, active and having wet diapers, you're fine.
