My left boob is sore. It's sore on the underside, to the front of my armpit. It's not really sore constantly but when I touch one particular area, it hurts. I just took my temperature and I don't have one. Is mastitis always accompanied by a fever or could it just be a clogged duct? How do I know the difference?
Re: Question about mastitis
I've had mastitis twice and both times I had a really high fever, sore boobs and redness, lethargy, etc. This second time was bad - I had a severe migraine and was vomiting. Yuk! Anyway, I've had antibiotics both times and it cleared quickly once the antibiotics were started.
I had a clogged duct briefly once, but with a little massage and warm compress it went away quickly. It was also located higher up my breast closer to my armpit.
Best of luck!!

My mastitis was MISERABLE! Fever, chills, uncontrollable shaking. The affected boob was hurting, but that was not the worst symptom.
Keep massaging the sore boob when pumping/BF and make sure you are emptying it frequently.
It sounds like a clogged duct to me. When I had mastitis, I didn't have any flu symptoms but my clogged ducts turned into red welts. I didn't have the regular symptoms such as fever or red streaks, however my doc said the redness and visible swelling was definitely mastitis.
Since then I have gotten clogged ducts. I make sure to massage them during every feeding or pump from above the clog towards the nipple (in the direction that milk would presumably flow).
