Pumping/expressing question

I have been really lazy and haven't pumped, just put LO to the boob, but then I realized that I should have a freezer stash in case of an 'emergency' such as me taking antibiotics that I can't BF on etc.

I got a little manual hand pump but seem to be able to express more milk myself (and it doesn't hurt like the pump does).  Does anyone else find this or should I just invest in a better pump?

Re: Pumping/expressing question

  • Invest in a electric pump only if you need it. Hand express if you're only trying to get a little stash going. I've got about 100 o.z. in my freezer for when we go out or when I want to have more than a couple of beers. Plus I don't plan to BF the whole time. Once he gets teeth or starts biting down I plan on pumping for a few months then use up my stash for the rest of the time.

  • If the hand pump works for you, then I say use it.  I'm working on building my freezer stash now.  I just started this week, so I don't have much, but I figure if I pump 2x a day from now until I go to work in 2 weeks, I should have a decent amount in the freezer for when needed.  When I go back to work, I plan on pumping at work what I'm taking to day care the next day.

  • I'd invest in a better pump.  I borrowed my sister's pump and got new tubing & parts (I know I'm breaking the one user rules but LO is fine).  Btw- I found that my milk supply went down a lot around 4mo with my first LO...so pump now if you can.  Also, when LO's start solids you will mix milk with the baby cereal.  It comes in handy to have a small stash.
