My shoulders are killing me....

I really need to improve my BF posture.  My back and shoulders are in so much pain and the Tylenol isn't even touching it!  I feel like having a long torso is working against me b/c I can't seem to hold LO up close enough to my body or prop enough pillows to remedy this.  I've always had really poor posture and tend to hunch over but BFing/holding DS has made it so so much worse :(  As much as I hate exercising I'm definitely headed back to the gym for some strength training as soon as I get the ok from my doctor...

  • Have you had any success BFing while laying down? I am a FTM with no experience, I just thought it may help relieve some of the strain.

  • I'm having the same problems.  I made my husband massage my shoulders last night while I breast fed because they hurt so bad.

  • Laying down to nurse is amazing! So much back relief! My boppy isn't high enough for me either, but I prop my feet up on the ottoman and that helps hug him up to me. When I nurse, I football carry him, so propping his head up with extra receiving blankets and one under my elbow helps! 
  • the weight of my ginormouus F sized boobs, plus holding LO up while feeding as well as prob poor posture during feedings is contributing to mine but yes my shoulders are killing me. At night I do the lay down feedings.

  • we haven't had any success laying down for BFing yet but I think I'm going to need to keep trying to make that work because I feel like that would make a huge difference at night especially. 

    I pulled out some 5lb weights a little earlier today and need to find some exercises that will target exactly where it hurts.  I'm hoping that helps until I can get to the gym or get a massage.  Sorry you ladies are having shoulder pain, too, but at least I know I'm not alone and just a wimp!  :)

You can strap it around you right at your rib cage so it's the perfect height to hold your tiny newborn at the right level, and it provides some back support. I had a boppy and kind of scoffed when I got this as a shower gift (we call it the inner tube) but it's turned out to be my favorite baby product by far!

  • I have found that stuffing blankets on top of my boppy helps fill in those gaps I get holding her. It's helped a lot the last few days.

    This exactly. I have an appt next week to get my back adjusted but I know a lot of it is going to be finding a comfortable position for upright BFing. Football is the best so far but I am trying to work on others so we could potentially get out of the house at some point here but yeah... its more painful than anything.

  • I have had to go to the chiropractor weekly since I starting BFing.  She showed me some counter-pose exercises to help straighten out my hunched back.  I'll try and describe them.  If you have a balance ball, she said the lay on your back and let your head hang.  Open your arms in the shape of a T, a Y, and a W.  The W hurts me the most.  This helps stretch out your three areas of your pecs.  It should be noted that this can be done on a foam roller too.  GL!
