Trouble TTC

Crinone versus Progesterone Inject

I was wondering if anyone had more success with one over the other, or more side effects with one versus the other?  My RE said they show the same effectiveness and though I'd rather not have to put it up my vagina for 8 weeks straight, I don't think the injection is a good option because DH might be traveling for work and not able to give it to me. :(

Re: Crinone versus Progesterone Inject

  • I've never done Crinone, but I'm on PIO now.

I always heard they were the same effectiveness-wise. However, when I was getting my instructions for post-transfer the nurse was talking about the shot and said "It's painful, but the most effective way to get progesterone. The doctors tried to switch to Crinone but the embryologist team told them they would not transfer into a patient who wasn't on PIO."

I found this very interesting! I couldn't do it without DH though. Do you have someone who lives close who could help you out?

Unfortunately I don't have someone I can count on every day for such an extended period of time...that's interesting that your office prefers you be on the injection. Hmm... :/

  • My office just does Crinone. All the studies that have been done have shown they are equally effective. With PIO it is easier to measure the progesterone levels, since it will show up in the blood. With Crinone, the effect is local so levels aren't as useful (as such, my clinic doesn't even bother checking your progesterone levels). I think PIO might be cheaper, but I'm not sure.

I found the Crinone to be pretty easy. I really didn't have much of a problem with spotting or discharge (which some people have). And I was pretty thrilled not to have to stick myself with a needle every day (there is *no way* DH would do it... he passes out at the sight of needles).

Yeah, I would think it would be pretty hard to do yourself, though not impossible. What does your office think?

There are actually some really good videos on You Tube on how to give yourself a PIO shot. I used those to figure out how to give myself my IM trigger. It's really not hard at all (although I've heard the trigger doesn't hurt like the PIO does).

I remember sulfa posting last year how she did them herself once- amazing! The actual shot is not bad at all. About an hour later though my cheeks majorly ache! lol

  • I had a choice between the two. I chose crinone. My clinic says they are equally effective. I know a couple girls on IF have done it themselves. I have also heard that you can do it in your thigh if you are doing it yourself. I would ask about that first.

My office recommended Crinone based on our situation.  They believe it's just as effective as the shot (of course different RE's have different opinions), so I'm just going to stick with Crinone.  I can change over to injects if I have any major issues.

Thanks everyone!  As always, you are awesome!

  • I was supposed to be doing PIO now but once my RE found out DH works nights and will not be here to give it to me I was able to switch to Crinone. It's really as bad as I thought it would be.
