I Had my DD at St. Vincent's and really had a great experience. I plan on having our next one there too! I also really LOVE my OB as well and he has privileges at St V's and Good Samaritan. His Name is Dr. Alfred Ono. His main office is right by Good Sam & a part time office By St. Vincents! Here is his number (503) 229-7353
Any way, Welcome to Portland and Cangrats! Hope the info helps!
I had my first at St V's and will have #2 there as well. I love it there!! My OB practices right by there, but he's REALLY busy and only sees patients like, 2 days a week.. But all of the other obs & midwives at his clinic are great. I see Dr. Damon Warhus at Womens Healthcare Associates. www.whallc.com

All of this. My OB with DD was Dr Trina Brodsky and my MW with DS was Mary Lewis-Rott, but Dr Warhus delivered him via RCS. They're all at Women's Healthcare Associates. WHC is an amazing practice and I've loved almost every person OB AND MW I saw there with both pregnancies. St V's was a wonderful hospital too. Some of the rooms are kind of small. My room with DD was huge and wonderful but the one with DS was super small. Just depends on how busy they are I guess? No matter size of the room I had a great experience with all the nurses there and if I ever had another child (don't plan to) I'd want to go back. Welcome to Portland!
oh, I'm not sure if you're interested in an epidural at all, but I've heard St V's does the best ones. I've heard horror stories about the epi's at OHSU and Emanuel. My Epi was a fricken godsend and amazing!
I have both of mine at OHSU and had a great experience there. The first one with an epi, no problems there at all. Second one all natural birth . Great experience all around. I was seeing Dr. Meg Hayes at Family Medicine. She is great and she sees the kids for their well-visits even now and I see her for my personal visits as well.
I loved everything about my experience at OHSU both with my OB, prenatal, and labor/delivery. I did have some epi issues, but they were not their fault, my body didn't respond well. My OB is Alison Edelman. She rocks.
I have no prior experience, just what I have heard... but I really liked the OHSU system because everything is available onsite. NO going to a different lab that may or may not be in network and such.
I haven't been to OHSU, but I haven't heard one bad thing about them. I have heard good . If you are interested in a water birth, they are one of two hospitals in Portland who allow it. I am a doula, and was just at a birth last night at St. Vincent's (where I also gave birth to my son), and the staff were beyond AMAZING!!! I had a mama who wanted a natural birth, no meds and not ONE of the people who interacted with her were pushy or even really talked about meds. They all seem to genuinely care about their patients which is really nice! I will always recommend St. Vincents. They are the best.

This is true. St V's doesn't push the drugs at all.. in fact I had to beg, plead and cry to get some drugs
I think everyone is so different. I had my first child at St. Vincents in January of 2010 and I had a horrible experience {not with my OB but with the hospital} and will not ever go back. I'm expecting #2 in August & I will be going to Good Sam.
My OB is Dr. Robin Barrett from Northwest Womens Clinic {she works with St Vincent & Good Sam} and I cannot say enough wonderful things about her. I highly recommend her.
As far as picking a hospital, I will tell you this - none of the "major" hospitals in Portland are bad, it's better to pick an OB that you really like and trust and go to the hospital that they practice at and/or recommend.
I had a great experience at OHSU. Loved my labor nurse and the hospital OB. They read and followed my birth plan, were great at communicating and making suggestions. When finally I decided to get an epi, the anesthesiologist did an amazing job even though I was not the most cooperative patient by that time. The nurses in Mom & Baby were fantastic - sweet, helpful, etc. The rooms were a good size and comfortable except that the labor room only had a chair for husbands and the recovery room's "daybed" was a 5 ft vinyl couch. The food wasn't great, but good enough - and the delivery person always brought DH one for free if there was an extra.
FYI, their childbirth class was surprisingly great.
I'd deliver there again in a heartbeat, but our insurance changed.

Oh, and OHSU is the only hospital in the metro area with a cord blood donation program. (Not banking, but free donation - think Red Cross blood donation).

I delivered my first at St. V's and I am getting ready to give birth to my second there. I cannot say enough nice things about the staff at St. V's. They are wonderful and extremely caring.
My first born was in the NICU for two weeks and the staff was amazing. I could start to cry just thinking of how kind they were to us and what great care they gave to our son.
Oh yeah and I go to Women's Healthcare Associates. My OBGYN is Dr. Garvie Loveland. She is great and always has time to talk. Dr. Dion helped with the delivery of my son and she is also wonderful.

St. Vincent is a fabulous place to give birth all my friends and family relatives have given birth there and were treated like movie stars!
