C-sections

planned/repeat c-section / catheter question?

If you have had a planned c-section, did you get your catheter put in before or after you had your spinal/epi in the operating room?

Last time I was induced and got it after the epi.  It ended in a c-section, so this time I'm having a repeat c-section.  I'm hoping for the catheter after the epi.

  • I had a planned and unplanned one and both went the same way. I had the catheter put in while I was in my room pre-op. The nurse came in, put the catheter in, shaved me, and put those weird things on my legs so I didnt get blood clots. I didn't get the spinal until I was in the OR right before surgery.

  • after. That's one way they knew I was numb.

  • With my planned c/s, they did my epi, catheter, etc all in the pre-op room.

  • I got my spinal and then the catheter, so it wasn't painful or bothersome at all.  I think they told me they were doing it, but it wasn't a big deal.

  • I was induced with our oldest son and it was placed after the epi. When I went in for my c-section with the twins it was placed before I was wheeled into the OR and therefore before the spinal. I much preferred the after epi placement.

  • Unplanned c-section, spinal, placed pre-spinal.  Not cool.

  • They put it in after the spinal for all 3 c/s.

  • I got mine after the spinal, BUT I had to ask for it specifically.  Apparently, at the hospital I had the c/s at, they usually do it before (idk why), but if you ask, they will do it after. So ask I did, and I didn't feel a thing!
  • Emergency cs- before the spinal TWICE wth... Horrible.

  • I labored without an epi and then we had to have a c-sec. They put the cathedar in BEFORE my spinal and I don't know what the flip they were doing but they about KILLED me. I will refuse to allow them to put one in before I am numb this time!
  • After! My nurse even said it would be "just cruel" not to wait until I was numb.

  • I had an unplanned c/s and the catheter put in after the spinal.  If I had a planned one I'd do the same thing.  I don't know why in the world anyone would do it differently!  As soon as I got the spinal in the OR they laid me back and did the catheter.  I don't think a catheter without a spinal/epi is something anyone - nurse or patient - enjoys.

  • They were going to put it in before, but I asked that they put it in after the spinal.  I just didn't know how it would feel and was worried it would hurt.  They didn't have a problem with putting it in afterwards.  I think they can do it either way.

  • With DS, they did it after the spinal. This post scares me for some reason.

  • why on earth would it even be an option to do it before the spinal?????  Catheters are a huge fear of mine!!  The thought of it before being numb gives me anxiety.

  • Holy crap. They put the catheter in people BEFORE they are numb??

Both of mine were after the epidural/spinal. I would have said oh hell no if they tried to do it before.
