DH Passed Everything!

So I've been posting on here occassionally for awhile now about DH's and my decision to join the Army. We've weighed everything and decided it was right for us. But it seemed to be an uphill battle to get in. DH did great on his ASVAB but was told they didn't think he'd pass the physical because he has a crooked finger. Well he passed that! Then they said they'd have to get a waiver for his criminal record (misdemeanors at 18yrs old) and we were told they weren't giving out many waivers. But he got one!  Now he's selecting his job tomorrow and enlisting Tuesday! We said we'd put our trust in God and if it was his plan it would all work out and if it wasn't then it wouldn't. But it has, and we're about to go on one crazy journey together!!! I'm So excited and so nervous at the same time!!!!

Re: DH Passed Everything!

  • Congrats! We (and by 'we' I mean DH) are joining the military too!

DH is going to be talking to the job counselor next week and then signing papers after that for the Navy! Woo!

He went in to choose today and they didn't have much open, only 2 jobs actually. One of them was Electrical Generation Machine Repairer, so that's the one he took. He was hoping for something medical, so he's kind of disappointed.. But hopefully he comes to like this one! Anyone know anything about this job, or know people who've done it?

I know a few but they don't do their actual job very often since we're Guard and don't use our Generators a whole lot. But it can be a fairly good gig as far as credentials for after the military.

  • I agree with BLT that it is a fairly good job.  However, someone should have explained to him that he could have held out for a job he was interested in.  Jobs in the medical fields come up fairly frequently.

I'm surprised there wasn't. Always need medics, x-ray techs, etc. And yeah, they should have told him he could wait for a job he wanted.

This upsets me.. we even called back in because we were under the understanding that the openings change all the time. But when we called we were told they already reserved it and it was the best they could get for him... Well I'm trying to learn to roll with the punches because that's the Army life right! ;-) DH is very mechanical so I think this will be a good job for him and he's going to start school eventually while he's in so he can further his education..

    Thanks guys!

  • This.

You can ALWAYS hold out for the job you want. They WILL get a slot. When I enlisted back in 2007, I originally wanted a slot as a mental health specialist. They said it wasn't available, so I went with my second choice-- Intelligence analyst. Luckily I enjoy my job, and wasn't TOO disappointed when I learned that I could have held out.

Congrats! And welcome to your first Army experience ;) Prepare for more.

The jobs available also depend on his ASVAB Scores not everyone is qualified for certain jobs because of it. Also a recruiter is not going to tell you that you can wait for the job that you want because they have numbers to meet.

But he can always try to reclass after his first enlistment which I know several people who have done that1
