Spring gardeners! What are you planting??

I'm thinking we might do peppers again b/c they seemed to really do well for me, but I don't know what else.  Hopefully basil again b/c I got a good crop of those, as well.

What are you planting?  Are you going to do so this coming weekend or next?  MC told me Feb 1st, so we're going to get our little garden patch ready tomorrow, tilling the soil and crap and then maybe plant in pots so I can transplant.  Although, my okra did well being directly planted into the garden.

Re: Spring gardeners! What are you planting??

  • We put in seeds today; just beets and carrots. We are saving transplants until the end of Feb. when we will put in tomatoes (several varieties), eggplant, melon, basil, squash, and possibly peppers.

We currently have asparagus and strawberries in there. Depending on how the asparagus settles in, I might jump the gun and pick some in the spring (you're not supposed to pick any the first year). We've only gotten a whopping three strawberries off our plants, but I'm hoping we'll have more this spring.

  • Oooh, carrots and squash.  Good ideas.  I'll add those to my list.  I don't think my cucumbers liked me, or maybe the aphids liked them better than I did.

I'd love to plant strawberries, I'm just worried about stupid birds eating them (if any happen to grow).

  • Awesome timing on this joyco - I was just about to start pinging coworkers to ask when they plant their Texas gardens.

    End of Feb, huh? Hmmmm...

  • MC - which ones of those am I the least likely to be able to kill? Abby has been asking to have a garden about a year now. FIL can help us make a raised planter.

    tomatoes. and basil.

if you can get the tomatoes before the birds (easy if you have nets or if you pull them before they are complete ripe and then just finish them in paper bags).

ETA: carrots are fun and Jack loooooves that it is a taproot. for some reason, he just gets a kick out of that.

ETA2: not strawberries. they take (at least) two seasons to really produce.

ETA3: make sure, if you do tomatoes, that you do at least one cherry tomato plant. they come off the vine soooooo sweet. we would just go over and grab some off the plant when we were playing outside and eat them as our snack.

  • I'm starting seeds inside right now.  So far I have: cauliflower, broccoli, bell peppers, asparagus, spinach and artichokes.  The only things I'm holding off on right now are tomatoes, carrots, peas, cucumbers, and beans.  I'm going to be building my raised beds and starting to prep the soil this weekend.

That said, this will be my first year with a real vegetable garden so don't take any cues from me :P

I'm the worst gardener ever.  Like, I don't use pesticides, I only water when I feel like it, damn it and there were bugs all over my damn plants b/c I couldn't figure out a way to get them to quit coming back.  That said, my pepper plants were INSANE.  I got at least 40 peppers from our 5 little plants.  The okra did quite well too and I didn't help them one bit.

  • MC, have any tips on raised beds? Did you buy a kit?

  • Inside I have already started tomatoes and peppers. We also plan to plant one more round of carrots and peas. Melons, green onions and summer squashes are also on the list. Oh and cucumbers.

ETA: MC reminded me that we are also doing beets. Those will go in this weekend. Currently in the boxes we have carrots, broccoli, spinach, arugula, and peas. We also have a separate section of blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries.

I need to do this- separate out the berries. Unfortunately, I wasn't thinking and I planted asparagus in the same bed as the strawberries and now I can't move either. I also wonder how many beds DH is going to let me add before he puts a halt to the whole thing.

Oh, I definitely bought a kit b/c I'm lazy and DH promises to get projects done but then sits on them for like 6 months.

Home Depot had kits on sale around this time last year (maybe it was mid-Feb).

I have no tips- I just cleared the grass, and dug in deep to try to keep the grass from growing under the bed. Then, I mixed soil and compost and planted a whole bunch of stuff. We've had good luck w/ the tomatoes, basil, eggplant, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber and carrots. We stalled w/  brussel sprouts and peppers.

If you google "vegetable planting calendar zone 8" you'll find a lot of what to plant when info.

Our berries are just along the side of the house, no boxes. The strawberries are planted as ground cover (meaning tons) all around the other berries. We got them super cheap as bare roots at the Natural Gardener (the strawberries). Most of our berries fruited last year when we bought them, so I hope we have a good crop this year. I love berries!!

I wish I could claim credit, but it was DH's idea. He didn't want the soil to wash away and it was that or grass. I'll take berries over grass any day Smile

  • gofurr that's how we grew blueberries, raspberries and blackberries growing up!  My parents said strawberries were too hard, I'll have to ask why (this was upstate NY too so totally different)

Yay for a garden thread!  My Dad is coming in two weeks and going to build us two raised beds, and I'm soooo excited! Any other tips for raised bed gardening?  Things to avoid,  things to do... Where do y'all get your seeds?  Do you plant everything as a seed in the garden?

Oh and about how tall are everyone's garden beds?

  • I am a TERRIBLE plant keeper. Animals? I was probably a zoo keeper in a past life, but plants. Fugetaboutit!

Anyway, would any Nestie gardners want to sell their excess (should there be any) to a lover of local produce but failure of a gardener (i.e. moi)?

    :)
