Trouble TTC

XP - TI vs IUI (Femara) - WWYD?

Today is CD1. I just talked to the nurse in the RE's office and will do another round of Femara + trigger and obviously mid-cycle monitoring.  They're giving me the option of TI vs IUI.

The IUI will be about $900 out of pocket.  If we do TI, I just pay appointment copays and for the trigger shot.

Is the success rate of an IUI much higher?  Is it worth the money, or would you try TI again?

TIA!

  • That's shockingly expensive. The IUI procedure plus sperm wash is only $300 for us. Obviously double that for B2B.

Unless you're including monitoring or something else in that cost, it doesn't make sense to me.

I would do TI if the difference in cost was $900 (assuming no MFI), if the difference in cost is more like $300, I would do IUI.

    Good luck!

  • The $900 is for everything - the drugs, copays, everything.  It still seems a little pricey to me... but I haven't been down this road much, so maybe I'm wrong.

  • Ditto PP- if you have any MFI, skip to the IUI.

FWIW, an OOP IUI cycle (all meds, monitoring, appointments plus wash and procedure) would be about $1500 for us.

  • Our chances with TI because of the Male IF and my cervical issues is about 4%, with IUI it brings our chances up to the normal 20%. I think it really depends on what issues you are trying to cicumvent

$900 seems about right for a Femara cycle. We're doing a Clomid + IUI next cycle and I'm expecting about $800 or so. ($300 for wash/procedure, $175 per ultrasound, and Clomid is cheap). Many women spend quite a lot more.

So, you have to pay for the drugs, copays, and monitoring anyway, it's just the IUI that is extra. I would do it for sure unless your DH had waaaay above average numbers (>100million/mL, >60% motility, normal range morph). If the numbers are extremely good, I'd still consider it. If odds are better with IUI than TI, you're saving yourself $ in the long run by doing fewer cycles.

It also depends whether YH is ready to take that step. MH doesn't like the idea of IUI at all... And he's dealing with a lot just to move forward to it. Seeing that IVF is our best option makes IUI the lesser evil.

    These are my thoughts exactly!
