Terrible heartburn...anyone else??

I'm 27 wks and have had TERRIBLE heartburn the last few weeks.  It was so bad last night I was up from 12:30 - 3:15 because I had to sit up in order to feel comfortable.  I go for my next appt on Tuesday so I'm going to ask then if there is anything to help.  In the mean time, do you know of any "remedies" or things to eat that would help?  I have a list of all the things I should avoid, but it seems like no matter what I eat, the burning starts.

Re: Terrible heartburn...anyone else??

  • I've been lucky & only have had it off & on... I pop a few antacids when I feel the need & I try to sleep raised up a bit.... usually when I'm in bed is the only time it begins to bother me. I hate heartburn - it sucks!! With my 1st, I had it constantly... ugh!

  • I remember having that really bad in the 3rd tri.. It was really bad at night! I was living on tums and could not eat anything that had a spice.. Very boring bland diet!

  • Yuck, I had that too. It was so much worse with the twins than it was with the singleton too.

My OB told me that I could take both Tums and Pepcid AC (morning and night) together because they have different active ingredients. It didn't totally take it away, but at least it took the edge off. Hang in there!

  • I took prevacid with both pregnancies... i never have heartburn- only when Pg- and it was so bad when it hit i thought i was having a heart attack.

I used to sell prevacid and felt very safe taking it. It's Cat B for pregnancy (which is the best category there is)... and it's also approved in children as young as 1yo and given to infants all the time, too.

It's OTC now at the 15mg dose, but if that doesn't work fo you, you can take 30mg and that should do the trick.  If not- talk to your doc - he/she can Rx another PPI for you to find one that works... though, as a class, PPIs usually work great.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • you could do prevacid, tums, selzers.

honestly the only thing that helped me was wendy's frosties (or any milkshake).  not kidding.  just be prepared to gain tons of weight, lol. My heartburn would be so bad, I'd sometimes just have to vomit to get all the acid out of my stomach.

  • I have been taking prilosec since conception basically.  I've had heartburn so bad, I had to do something to get relief.  I would get heartburn after drinking water :(

  • Thanks so much for all the recommendations!  Tums aren't cutting it anymore and like PP said, even water is sometimes aggravating it. I kept telling myself that milkshakes would help coat the throat, but all that's doing is coating some extra lbs on the behind.  :)

Please tell me it goes away once the babies are here??

It did for me. :) Like within a few days after birth it was gone completely. Hang in there. It's awful, I know.

  • It goes away IMMEDIATELY after you have your babies!

  • *haha* Yes, it does... at least with me it did (with my previous kiddos). The only reason you get it is b/c as they grow, the babies are pushing on your stomach & there's less room in there. I found that eating smaller meals more frequently does help.

  • Mine is super bad now.   Since Ive hit the third trimester it has gotten worse.  But now at 35 weeks its all long duck dong day.  Tums takes it away, for like 30 min an its back every time I eat.   Par for course I suppose.

  • Don't wait till Tues-- call your OB now and see if they'll recommend something over the phone without you having to come in. I think I took Zantac when I was pregnant, but I can't remember.

  • FYI....At first, my OB recommended Zantac and that did NOTHING for me.  She also said to try taking two doses because that would just be the prescription strength amount, which also didn't help.  I just don't want you to waste your money if it doesn't help and if water is causing heartburn, like it did me, then you might try the prilosec.

  • From 12-20 weeks I lived on Tums and then by 20 weeks that wasn't helping at all so the OB prescribed zantac 150mg twice a day.  That worked awesome until 30 weeks when I was then taking the Zantac and Tums... and it was still bad.  I guess one good thing about delivering at 30 weeks, 3 days is that my heartburn ended very shortly after (c:
