ghostgirl/HeyJellisy re: Tort

Hi Ladies,

I saw the post below on PT recs for Torticollis and was wondering if you would mind telling me a little bit more about what sort of treatments your children received? My son was diagnosed with it at 2-months and we've been doing PT at Bodies in Motion since. It's definitely better than it was- he has full range of motion and his head has rounded out but he still tilts his head quite a bit esp. when he's tired. He's 8-months old now. Our PT doesn't seem to worried and says the muscle is still a little tight so just wants us to keep stretching him a few times a day and she focuses more on trying to get him to crawl. I'm just worried seeing her isn't doing much esp since I'm not that worried that he isn't crawling yet.  Any thoughts??

 TIA!

  • To start, DS had a pretty mild case and he started crawling at 5 months which really helped strength his neck muscles since he had to hold his head up without support.  Less than a month after he started walking (10 months) he was considered fully normal.  He didn't have any rounding, just the stiff neck.  Like you we started going after his 2 month appointment.  We saw the PT every month to 6 weeks and each time she gave us a series of stretches to use depending on where his gross motor skills were.  We started out with the hug hold and some other simple stretches and eventually branched into using an exercise ball and doing angles on it (DS really liked those).  I think we stretched twice a day at the beginning and as things got better, we switched to once a day.

The PT told us that his case was mild enough that it would most likely have eventually cleared up on its own once he started walking but that it was much more beneficial to correct it earlier.  I had asked at one point how long treatment usually goes on and she told me to about 14 months for mild cases but that children who develop gross motor skills earlier usually finish treatment earlier.  That was definitely our experience.  More than the stretching, DS being consonantly in motion and having to support his head at the midline on his own made the biggest difference.

I said this before, but I loved PT.  I had the best conversations and learned so much about physical development.  It was amazing how important things like cruising is to the development of their hip socket and their future flexibility.  I learned so much each visit.
