Frustrated at being High Risk

I know it's for the best interest of myself and twins, and for the doctors to be careful, but I'm so frustrated with what seems to be overkill concern and appointments. I average 1-2 Doctor appts a week! How did those of you get through it? I feel like I'm a huge walking siren in these places! I know it's best but it is frustrating!

Re: Frustrated at being High Risk

  • That seems like a lot for 10 weeks. At that point, I was just seeing the OB every 3 weeks. But once I started seeing them MFM, I was having appointments every week (just about.) But then I switched to an MFM who delivered, and I only had to see him. So it wasn't so bad. Might that be an option?

  • Why do you have 1-2 appointments a week?

That's pretty ridiculous.  I only had one a month until about 16w when I started seeing the MFM monthly too.  So an appt every 2w (alternating OB and MFM) until I was about 28-30w, when they got more frequent.

Do you have other risk factors?  That would explain the frequency, but that still sounds like a lot.

  • I got released from my infertility doc at 10 weeks, saw my OB at 11 1/2 weeks, and my MFM at 12 weeks for an NT scan. After that I went to seeing my OB every 3 weeks and my MFM every 2 wks.

  • I agree that sounds exsevive. I was very high risk (triplets and had DS early) and never went that much. I went every 3 weeks that early at around 16 weeks went every 2 weeks and at 26 started every week do to issues had and then PTL. Even at end I only went 1 timea week with climbing bread pressure and everything.

Is there something else going on?

  • Do you have some sort of specific problem that needs such close monitoring so early? I know my OB isn't planning on seeing me that frequently until 3rd tri.

My twins were discovered at 11weeks, and I've been seeing the OB every 3-4 weeks. After my next appointment, which is next week, I'll be going every 2 weeks, until 3rd tri, when I'll go every week. I get an u/s at every appointment, and they check my cervix, but other than that, nothing out of the norm. I have no preexisting medical issues though, and neither do the babies.

  • Yes, I agree with the others. This certainly sounds like overkill to me. With a month left to go is when they went to once a week with me... like any normal pregnancy. Do you/twins have any other issues that may resort to you needing to be watched more closely? The only difference with my appts. is that I have more u/s than I did with my other singleton pregnancies & I only see doctors as opposed to midwives.

If you or the twins don't have issues that you know of, I suggest asking as to why you're inundated with appointments.

  • I saw the most cautious of MFMs and I didn't have near that many appointments in the beginning. I saw her at 6 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks and then in the second tri and beyond I had appointments every other week, until they became weekly.

  • I'm with the PPs, that seems like an awful lot for 10w. My RE released me to my OB as soon as I had a positive test, as long as she would do betas and a 6w u/s. So I had betas, appointment at 5w, appointment at 6w with u/s, planned for an 8 week appointment and u/s, then I would have seen her at 12w, 16w, 20w, referred to MFM for level 2 u/s and consult, then with no issues back to OB for 24w, 28w, 30w, 32w appts, then weekly. That said, it didn't happen like that -- bleeding episodes, sciatic nerve pain, and PTL threw that out the window. Are you seeing multiple doctors/specialists that are creating that many appointments?

  • That is a lot, for sure. I'm only one day behind you, and my second doctor's appt. won't be until my 12-week visit and U/S.  I would be frustrated, too!

  • are you serious?  I've never heard of anyone with twins having 1-2 appointments a week, especially in the first trimester.  and even in the 2nd tri, I only had monthly u/s appointments to check and make sure babies were growing on track and no discordance.  Is this made up?

  • I'm high risk for the high risk if that is even possible (IUGR/SGA, GD, lung and heart issues for me, and now cholestasis)! Just take it appointment by appointment that is all you can really do <: Didn't realize you were only in 1st tri, I started seeing my MFM at 15 weeks (my OB actually gave my case over because I am complicated). I was having appointments every 4 weeks till week 25 when they found small growth for my babies. Now I have an MFM every two weeks with growth u/s and in between I have NST's So I see someone once a week at this point.

  • We have an MFM appointment every other week - standard for their practice. DW goes to the endocrinologist every 6-8 weeks to check levels. No OB.

  • I'm with everyone else...unless you've got something else going on besides just multiples, that seems like a large number of appointments.  I had a blood clotting issue that required me to be on lovenox.  Even with that, my appointments with my MFM were still just every other week with an occasional hematology appointment thrown in there.

  • I had a real high risk pregnancy and my appoints didn't double like that until I hit 18 weeks! I was getting an u/s every other week until i developed TTTTS, then it was every week. When my cervix got short and I needed a cerclage that's when I needed 2 appointments a week. I think you Dr. is just trying to cover their butt! That is overkill for a pregnancy that, other then having 2 babies is completely normal.
  • Oh my./.. I would start going crazy.... I saw my ob at 16 weeks that was when I was finally able to make an appointment and KEEP it and found out we were having twins and then at 19 weeks found out SUPRISE triplets..

SOOO I have always seen the MFM every other week except for the month only say them on the 16th just because EVERYTHING is doing great!! But starting on the 3rd of Feb. I have every week appointments so really I got a two week break but I loved it I was able to work for a full two weeks without switching stuff around at work!!!! I do have to agree with PP that early seems kinda crazy, MFM is watching out for the babies and your health but some times it just feels time consuming!!!

I wish you the best of luck and I hope VERY soon you dont have to go to ALL those Dr.'s appt's and can JUST REST... Sending LOTS of T&P and a VERY VERY HEALTHY pregnancy!!!!

  • Ditto pp. That's unusual. Do you have complications or additional risks going on? I didn't even know I was having twins till 12w and then I went every 4w till 28w then at 30w and then weekly after that.
