Babies: 0 - 3 Months

XP-Recommend your pump!

To give a little back story, I had every intention of exclusively breastfeeding LO.  BUT after a horrible first night in the hospital (the nurses technique was to anger the baby then start jam her head into my breast) and many unsuccesssful attempts from there I started pumping and using bottles.  Now after meeting with a Lactation consultant I find out I can only nurse on the left side and have to pump the right.

I currently use Tommee Tippee bottles and single electronic pump.  Having some issues with the bottles but I think we can get past them seeing as LO is so young.  BUT the pump I can not find replacement parts for and its a little compact unit not really meant for consistant use IMO.

What pump do you use if you use one?  What pumps have you heard good things about?  Do you get what you pay for when it comes to pumps?  I plan to use some of my portion of our tax return to make this purchase so it will have to stay around prefereably under $300.  But if I can go cheaper and get good quality I could like to.

TIA for your help..sorry got so long FTM here!

Re: XP-Recommend your pump!

  • I had my Lansinoh pump through 2 kids. The Ameda purely yours is also very good and basically the same thing.

Many women also like Medela pumps, but I preferred the closed system so moisture didn't get in the tubing (some, not all but some women get mold in the tubes eventually and it's one more part to replace).

  • I just started using a pump. I'm using a Medela. So far I like it though its I'm still getting used to the whole thing. You can avoid the build up of moisture in the tubes by disconnecting the tubing from the bottles while the pump is still on. (Only a minute or so is needed). I've only been using the pump for three days.

My BFF works for a non profit organization that assists lower and middle class families during pregnancy and up until the child enters kindergarten. She is the one who recommended the Medela to me. My mother and I also ran into a woman in the store when we were shopping that recommended the Medela to us. I think the only other pump I heard anything about was the Advent.

  • I had a very similar experience at the hospital and was pumping 24 hours after her birth because the "help" from the nurses made it too painful to handle. I rented an ameda elite double pump (hospital grade pump) from my hospital's mommy market for around $40/mo. I didn't want to invest in a pump not knowing how BFing would go for me. I don't have anything to compare it to but it seemed to work great. I BF'd and pumped for 1 month, but gave it up after a nasty sinus infection made my supply drop big time.

  • If I could, I would get the Ameda Purely Yours. Our hospital recommends Ameda or Medela (and carries Medela), but the Ameda is a closed system, unlike Medela.

  • I'm EP and I think it's a double-bind on whether or not to say PISA or to take the leap and go for a hospital grade rental pump.  I'm using a slightly older PIS right now and am at a tipping point of going and getting a rental like I used with DD.

  • I am using a Medela PISA which was recommended by my hospital.  I EP and think it works great.  I also pumped with the Medela pump while I was still in the hospital and they ended up giving me an entire bag of replacement parts which is one of the reasons I bought the Medela. (I didn't buy one until after leaving the hospital.)

  • I rented a Medela symphony fr two months and now that I've decided to breastfeed after going back to work, I bought the ameda purely yours and I like it.
  • I have the Medela Electric Swing Pump (Single). It was about $200 and works great!

  • I use the mipump.. i think by first years or something like that. I have the single that was about 50 bucks ( you can get the double for the same price at baby depot at burlington though) and I love it.  I used the Medela symphony whatever one at the hospital for the 2 weeks i was there with little one after birth and personally like this one 1000x better.  I also have 2 friends with the same pump.

  • I use The First Years MiPump. It is around 80 dollars. I have nothing to compare it to but I exclusively pump and it works excellent. I think if you want to not invest 200-300 dollars try this one first.
