Hi, I am Christina. I am 20 years old. I have done a little research on VBACs but I still have tons of questions and what to know more information of course. My son was born 01/21/09 via emergency c/s due to his heart rate declining, turns out the meds made him sleepy. I have a VBAC friendly hospital to deliver at and a VBAC friendly provider.
I was told I can't have pitocin no matter what? If I can, low doses of course and only as needed, how would I bring this up to me doctor to avoid a RCS?
I was also told I can not go past my due date at all! It scares me that I might not going into labor before 40 weeks. When I was pregnant with my son I was 3cm and 90% effaced at 37 weeks. I was told that I can request a non-stress test and if I pass I can go to 42 weeks... Is this true? And if so, how would I get my doctor to agree to it?
Are there anythings I can do to prepare for my VBAC? Any information that helped you ladies in making sure your wishes were met, your body was ready, etc?
Any and all information, helpful tips, etc. are very much welcomed and appreciated. Thank you.
Re: Just wanted to introduce myself :)
There is no reason you can't go past 40 weeks if you have NSTs. If your provider is saying you have to deliver by 40 weeks they aren't really pro-VBAC so be very careful and carefully examine what they tell you.
There is no reason you must deliver by that arbitrary date, the baby will need to be checked at that point through a NST to make sure things are fine but other than that if you want a VBAC it's important to let your body go into labor naturally and not rush it. 38-42 weeks is the normal range for delivery.
Pitocin is debatable and you'll see arguments on both sides.
What's clearly dangerous is cytotec or postaglanins as there is a clear link to UR with there use.
As for preparation I'd recommend being healthy lots of walks, safe exercise, eating healthy, etc.
Read up on VBACs some great articles are mentioned in a post below.
Most importantly educate yourself on normal pregnancy and delivery, and ask questions before agreeing to anything.
Good Luck!
I want to say thank you so much. I don't think I will be setting up my RCS date like they want me to. I will mention doing the NST at 40 weeks, assuming I don't go into labor before then.
I can't walk far, bed rest and fainting spell don't allow me too far. I do pregnancy yoga every afternoon though. And I eat very healthy! So I guess I am doing good on the preparation.
Someone mentioned Red Raspberry Leaf Tea to me, how does that help? When should I take it? How much? And is tea or pills better?
Also I hear taking Evening Primrose Oil Orally & Vaginally can help prepare too. I have some capsules from when I was TTC. How much should I take. And is it safe vaginally? When should I start taking it?
I have read a lot about pregnancy, delivery, etc. I have seen 2 births first hand. Is there any specific questions I should ask my DR for my next appointment? It's the 30th BTW.
I know I am asking so many questions but info is greatly appreciated. I am also only 20/21 weeks but I like to prepare and plan early.
