I need honest opinions...wwyd

DH and I were supposed to vacation in Jamaica this past August for our 1 year wedding anniversary. Well needless to say my OB did not say "don't go" but she did have concern should something happen the medical care would not be up to par in Jamaica. So we made the decision together to put off our Jamaica trip, we both wanted to have this little baby much more than sun and sand. Well when we went to our travel agent to cancel we were penalized $100p/p for cancelling the resort but we were unable to be refunded for our flight. The airfare is non-refundable and non-transferrable blah! So anyhow we were told we have up to one year to use the air tickets which cost us $1200. Anyhow our year expires May 1st. My question is do we go to Jamaica for a long weekend at the end of April? Am I being selfish? I don't know how I would feel about leaving LO for 4 days even though we have a ton of offers from family to keep the baby. On the flip side wasting $200 was one thing but to watch $1200 fly away is kind of hard. I am really stuck on what to do and what is the right thing to do...any advice esp from 2x mamas(since you can see in hindsight now) will be very much appreciated :)

This. I didn't feel comfortable traveling in jan like we normally do, but I would have gone up until the end of 2nd tri.

In any case, would you consider bringing the baby? I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving him for that long at only 2 months, but that's me.

  • We left DS when he was 3 months for a long weekend but it was just a 3 hour drive.  I don't think I'd leave the country with such a small baby...especially if you're planning to BF.

Taking the baby along wouldn't be my first choice either but it might be the best in your situation.

  • I'd take the baby too, especially if breastfeeding. It doesn't cost a lot extra to buy an "infant on lap" ticket.

  • I'd probably bring the baby as well.

  • Could you use the tickets to fly somewhere else, like to visit family?  Nontransferable usually just means you can't transfer the ticket to another person.  I've had to cancel a flight before and used the voucher to book a flight to a different location.

  • I'd go and take the baby.  We are traveling to Mexico for a wedding in May and will be taking LO with us.  I'm planning on BFing and, even if I wasn't, I don't think I'd want to travel internationally and leave a baby that young at home.

And, yeah... why was your OB weird about traveling in Aug?

  • I wish! It would be great to fly to Florida visit fam and still be in the country BUT we booked with Air Jamaica sooooo...

And OB never said "dont go" she just aadvised against the possibility of needing medical care in Jamaica and being a FTM mom who is a worry-wart at heart we decided to put it off...

I may discuss taking LO with DH see what his thoughts are about that.

    hmmmm....decisions

  • I would also take the baby. There's no way I would leave the country and leave behind a baby that young.

  • my friend went to South Korea last fall, and left her 4 month old with her ILs. She felt a bit guilty for it, but not afterwards. Everything worked out fine for them.

Just depends on how you feel, I guess!

I'd take the baby or change the flights to somewhere else.  Also, know sometimes you can't do a lap-baby for international travel; so you'd be looking at another ticket.  I'd look into both of those options before leaving baby to go international.  I honestly wouldn't do that.  Especially not at 2 months old.

  • GO ON VACATION!!!!! and TAKE your baby with you. A baby does not automatically mean you need to put your life on hold. You can definetly vacation with the little one! My sis in law did it all the time. We are taking our baby to mexico later in the year. :-)

  • I work in travel (but don't book it - so don't know all the ins/outs!!) -- call your travel agent and have her give you ALL options possible.  Sometimes you can even exchange the existing ticket towards later dates (like a fictitious booking) and at least that would buy you some time.  GL!

  • I left my 2 month old with my parents for a long weekend. It was SO nice! DH and I were able to have some alone time after baby and we knew that our DS was in good hands. I say if you have people you trust taking care of baby while you're gone then there is nothing to worry about. Its not often you'll be able to get away without kids. Go have FUN!

  • I'd be way more concerned to take a 2 month old to Jamaica (if the concern is medical care) than I would have been to travel in August, but that's beside the point.

I also would check on all options. And why do you only have until May if the original trip was in August? That confuses me. I'd be more comfortable leaving a 6 month old than 2 month old...

  • I would never leave a 3 month old for 4 days...heck, I wouldn't leave one overnight.  However, I plan to EBF again.  Maybe it would be different if that was not my plan.

If I couldn't take the baby, I would eat the loss. ::shrugs::

  • I would go and would take the baby. When we went on our baby moon earlier this year we met loads of people traveling with infants- they seemed to do really well. Plus- I'm sure your resorts can connect you with good doctors if needed. It's not as if you are hiking out into the bush in sub-saharan Africa and won't have any resources.

We're planning on traveling with an infant during my maternity leave- I'm looking forward to it- just trying to figure out how fast I can get that passport for her.

  • RE:PP...sorry I am not sure how to highlight the post I am responding to. Anyhow we only have until the last day in April to use the airfare because it is good for one year from the purchase date.

  • A friend of mine just got back from a week in Cuba with her four month old.  They did have her parents there to help, but they had a great time!  I'd probably take the baby.

Not sure what the particular rule is for Air Jamaica, but you usually do not have to buy a full-priced ticket to travel with an infant internationally.  You can still take them on your lap.  It is not entirely free (we are paying something minimal like 10% of the ticket price to Mexico for a lap child), and you do have to get the child an actual ticket and passport... but no full-price / own seat ticket.

  • If I were you I'd go and leave the baby.   I think you are going to feel guilty as hell, but the break will do you some good.  I wouldn't let that dough just go down the tubes.

I might consider bringing the baby, but I think taking him out of his element so young might be a little too soon.

You'll make the right decision.  It's only 4 days and I'm guessing the trip isn't super long (like 5+ hrs).  So if God forbid something did happen you could get home pretty quickly.

My Mister and I are thinking of taking a long weekend away right before my maternity leave ends.  It's just a 1 hr plane ride away though.  Still not 100% we'll go though. Just depends on our baby's disposition.

When we traveled to Scotland, it was basically full price for every airline we checked.  That's why I suggested she look into it and not just assume LO could be a lap-child., And she had to have her own seat with proper childre restraint system.

  • I think whether you are comfortable leaving the baby is not something you (or we) can predict. However, children under 2 fly free (most airlines) and besides needing a crib in your room shouldn't really change the accomodations you would need. I have friends who took thier baby to Mexico when she was about 3 mos old and they had a great time :)
  • I'm with PP--obviously the best scenario would have been to go in August (it's not like there's much that could be done medical-wise in first/really early second tri anyway). However, given the situation you're stuck with, I agree with taking baby with you. I'm pretty laid back when it comes to letting our DD stay with family and spend the night away from us (she probably does about once a month), and even I couldn't get myself to that point until she was much older. (I left her for the first time overnight when she was 6 months--and it was really hard, but necessary as DH and I were in his sibling's wedding).
