I talked to a customer today wih the first name Kalemaileonaona. No joke. I won't say her last name but it looked similar to her first. There are bad names and then there are ridiculous names.

Was she maybe foreign? I'm only wondering because with a complicated last and first name like that, I guess it's possible that she or her parents were immigrants?

I concur. I'm of West African descent and I'm sure some people look at my name and feel that way. But I have lots of relatives who feel that way about American names. It is all relative.
I have a Hawaiian friend and all of her kids (8 of them) have long names like this but she calls them by a shortened version of it. Do research before knocking a name... it may just be legit.
OP lives in Hawaii, so she may be more familiar with the naming style there. This may be an odd name for Hawaiian culture.
Nursed without dairy, egg, soy, peanut, treenut, fish, shellfish or beef for over a year.
Currently tandem nursing dairy, egg, and shellfish free.

I agree with all of the PP's. A foreign name or one that is a nod to someone's ethnicity is alot different than naming your kid something Youneek.
Naming your kid Jakxson is alot different than giving him a traditionally Scandanavian name like Soren. They're both odd in the U.S. but one is just plain stupid.

True, but living there doesn't always = understanding the culture.
Very true. Going with benefit of the doubt here!

There was a teacher where I grew up that went by the name Harry Wiener, and a couple that ran the local barber shop named their daughter Satin Sheets. My MIL's mother was Helena Blandena, and my grandmother was Iva Amazon (pronounced Am-zon). Welcome to why we aren't using those family names...

The Hawaiian language is interesting.Their words can be SO long Hello, state fish...humuhumunukunukuapua'a.
I judge stupid names all the time, but if it's a name from another culture I keep my trap shut.
Make that a double
Also, a lot of the names that get passed around (heard from my sister, a friend, a teacher, an l&d nurse, etc.) aren't legit, although they're funny. There's an interesting article on snopes about names like Asole and Le-a and the like.
That said, I had some doozies while teaching. Bonjovianna's parents were big fans of the band. Nissan was conceived in one. And Ferreal's parents knew he was for real.
Married in 2008 - DD born in 2010 - EDD 6.15.2012!
Well, I've lived on the island for several years, and I'm a little jaded, but I'm pretty sure the Hawaiian culture is nearing extinct, with the exception of tribal tattoos and horrible names nobody can pronounce, locals included. That's just my opinion of course.

I never said it was unusual, just bad. It's always those on the lower end of the socioeconomic ladder with these names too. It's just something I've observed. I haven't met a Hawaiian who is interested in preserving their culture. Just my opinion, man.

My impression of the OP is that she resents living in Hawaii. This is not the first time she has posted about being unhappy with the locals for one reason or another.
I have no issue with choosing traditional names for your child based on your particular ethnic group regardless of how prominent the group is currently. I would think there is an reasonable chance that the parents saw the traditional name as a way to preserve a culture that they valued while watching it decay in larger society. How is that really so different than naming your child Thurston Howell V?

Agreed!! She has admitted that she is unhappy with the people and the culture etc... I have lived in other states as well, and although I have had bad experiences, I do not bash the whole culture or the entire state. Appears to me that the OP is creating her own misery with her racial remarks (I am referring to her numerous posts how she hates Hawaii and the people that live there).

Some names are funny, yes there are a lot of people on the islands that don't care about their geneology. You are surrounded by people that don't care, but in my Ohana, we do care and many are fluent speakers and know our history. Both on my dads side and moms. so this is an example that everyone has their own opinions

All I think when I see a name like that is "How does she fill out a form? Are there enough boxes?"

Your judgments and are ignorant.
My judgements? Ok?
Anyhow, my co-workers, whom are locals, and I had a good laugh at the name. I wonder if they hate their own race too?
Oh and I really think the name Kimo is stupid. I for realz must be a racist, seestah.
