1st Trimester

First flutters?!

Hello everyone! I just wanted to hear from people who have also experienced the first movements of their baby in the first trimester. I'm a small woman, 5'1 & 115 lbs. I am currently 10 weeks, 5 days. I felt my first movement at exactly 10 weeks. It felt like a muscle spasm almost, and lasted about 3 seconds. It made me gasp at first :]

PS - I don't care if you didn't feel your baby move this early. And I am not an idiot who has never felt gas. Gas feels nothing like twitching.

  • "it just gives you this amazing filled up joyous feeling!"

Apparently gas or muscle spasms give you this feeling because it wasn't the baby.

  • I would be very surprised if you are actually feeling the baby this early, especially for a first pregnancy.

  • I really don't think it was the baby at this point.  It's still super tiny.  Gas rolling around in the belly sounds like the culprit.  I have been pregnant before and the gas is pretty much the exact same feeling as early movement.

  • Kasi my comment was not directed at what you said. Your comment was fine. However, some people here don't realize that there is a way to enlighten someone, and then there's just being mean. I was under the impression that these forums were for kind support and advice from other women. Not an attack on women who have never been pregnant before.

  • Thanks everyone for the info :] ... I understand that some women mistake gas for kicks. I have been suspicious of carrying twins for about the last month (I'm way too big for how far along I am.) I found out I was pregnant somewhat late in the game, so I don't have my first ultrasound until Tuesday. We will find out then if I am either a) feeling gas, b) carrying twins, or c) further along than I suspected.

did you see the unicorn too???

OPer, it is probably gas/bloat.  Give it about another 10 weeks and then tell me how the movement is.  Gas/movement is a night and day difference.  I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt because I *think* this might be your first pregnancy.  No snark intended.  Trust me on this one.

  • Unfortunately, if you're looking for support and compassion you have come to the wrong place. I feel like this seems to be more of a place where women take out their pregnancy hormones on other women. I rarely post except in response to other posts for that reason. You will feel that precious baby move soon I'm sure.

  • Did you lurk a little before you started posting, or did you just jump right in? If in your post you comment "no negative reply's please!" you're going to be pretty guaranteed to get some responses that you don't like. It's the internet, it's nothing to get upset about, just ignore if if you don't like it. It's NBD.

I'm carrying triplets, this is my second pregnancy, and I saw the babies moving vigorously yesterday at my NT scan and I'm not feeling a thing that isn't gas.  Plus I'm 12 weeks and already know what baby movement feels like.  Not very likely you're feeling the baby or babies move just yet.  But if you want to keep believing that then go right ahead.

I didn't realize that posting something completely non threatening was grounds to be mocked and laughed at. Someone's a bit catty. Ever heard if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?

Where abouts did you feel the "flutter"  more than likely your baby is still VERY low in your pelvis.  So unless you felt it right above your Vagaygay it was just a spasm.  I feel those all the time, it's not the baby though.  I am also petite and didn't feel my son move until 20 weeks.

At that point your baby is less than half an ounce, that's less than a SHOT of whiskey, and about the size of prune.  At my last appt my baby was just under my belly button and the nurse was very surprised, because like I said most of the time it's very low in the pelvis.  I was 12 weeks 4 days.

  • Oh *sigh*. I have to pull out this fact again. At 10 weeks your baby weighs approximately .14 oz. Less than two tenths of an oz. What do you think baby's leg weighs? It's also floating, so it doesn't have anything to push "against". It would be absolutely wonderful if we could feel movement this early, but baby doesn't have enough oomph. I won't tell you how to interpret your bodily sensations. If you think you can feel that then - ummm... okay then.

The spasm feeling was right where my "panty line" is, on the left side. It felt like a rapid gentle thudding or a spasm like I said. The location and how strange it felt was why I attributed it to the baby. I have been having lots of gas the last few weeks too, so the difference in the feeling caught me off gaurd.

Thats because it was a spasm.

  • Here's a fact: at 10 weeks your baby is 1" long & weighs less than a quarter of an ounce.

Surely it is moving in there, but the chances of you feeling it, esp as a first time mom, are slim to none.

It will be exciting when it happens for real though.

  • Even if you are carry twins, at 10 weeks there is not a possibility that you felt first flutters/kicks. Although the arms and legs are developed, the weight of your baby(ies) is approximately a quarter oz and about 1.25 inches long. The size/weight of your baby(ies) would prevent you from feeling any flutters at this point... unless you are way further along than 10 weeks.

The average time that first-time pregnant mothers feel their baby is 18 week. For some, no earlier than 16 weeks. Unless there is a problem, most have felt their "first flutters" by 21 weeks. First felt flutters are usually referred to as "quickening". Often times first-time mothers mistake first flutters for gas, the need to void/deficate, and/or cramps. There are a lot of changes going inside of your abdomen, so things(organs) moving around and growing to accommodate your baby(ies) are often mistaken for the first flutters.

I am a young nurse who has worked on a labor/delivery floor and I have no children (although I'm currently 4 1/2 weeks pregnant). I do not claim to be an expert in this field, but do have a working knowledge of how the body grows and changes.

I could see how you may have been offended by some of the previous comments, but remember we are all on the same team. This forum has really good questions and advice from people from all walks of life and experience. Since I'm new to this team too, I rely on the people who have gone through this before me to tell me what to expect. I would also recommend buying a "What to Expect..." book. I've found that those books are really helpful.

  • I've had similar feelings, sometimes it's clearly gas because I fart shortly after the feeling and other times it's just this little flutter feeling. I wrote it off as gas because of what everyone here says. However, after talking to other mom's they've said they felt the same thing early on and felt it was the baby moving. Something else I've been told is that the baby will mimic the mom's activity level, someone very sedentary may never feel the baby kick, whereas someone very active would feel movement more frequently. I felt more flutters when I was walking my dog every day, but now that it's gotten colder I haven't been walking him as far/often and haven't noticed that feeling in a while.
  • How sad to find out it was gas, LOL!

those who are defending the "meanness" you have to remember that these posts come on here almost 1 time a day, and even if the op hasn't seen those posts, when you look at the facts of how much the baby weighs and the force of which it would take to actually feel a kick, it's kind of a long shot that it's really the baby kicking. true everyone's pregnancy is different, but after a while reading these same posts about ftm's feeling flutters at 9 or 10 weeks gets a little old...well i guess not for me b/c it always is fun to read, lol!!!

You would actually be considered one of the rude ones. It's not stupid to not be sure weather or not she felt a baby move. It's her first pregnancy. Of course, I'm sure you never wondered anything during your pregnancy because you are all knowing and would never ask such a silly question, so you can't possibly understand.
